Asphalt pavements are considered the best method to pave highways due to features such as reduced noise, good skid resistance, the opportuneness of maintenance, recyclability, high stability, high durability, good resistance against water damage, and improved comfort. What are some traits of asphalt? Petroleum asphalt is produced in all consistencies from light road oils to heavy, high-viscosity industrial types. Asphalt softens when heated and is elastic under certain conditions. The mechanical properties of asphalt are of little significance except when it is used as a binder or adhesive. Types of Asphalt? There are two main types of asphalt: hot mix and cold mix. Hot mix asphalt is made with a heated aggregate that is combined with asphalt cement and then mixed with water. The hot mix is then placed on a roadbed and compacted. Cold mix asphalt is made with a cold aggregate that is combined with asphalt cement and then mixed with water. The cold mix is then placed on a roadbed and compacted. Uses of Asphalt? Asphalt is most commonly used for paving roads, parking lots, and other surfaces that need to be durable and water-resistant.
