“The only purpose of advertising is to make sales”. This is one of my favorite quotes. Coined by Claude Hopkins in his seminal book,‘Scientific Advertising’ 100 years ago. It’s not my favorite quote because I agree with it 100%. But because it tries to give a quantifiable and measurable framework, to a discipline considered to be more of an art, than a science. This quote pushes me to think about the broader purpose of marketing, every once in a while. And more specifically, the purpose marketing serves in an enterprise B2B environment. Here’s my take “The only purpose of marketing is to enable the action of sales”. By that, I don’t mean sales enablement in its traditional form. But to the broader role marketing plays in paving the way and supporting the action of an eight figure sale. It focuses marketing’s objective around a measurable framework, without holding it accountable to unreasonable outcomes. In an enterprise B2B environment, Marketing. Doesn’t generate pipeline, but it enables the creation of pipeline.
