Nicholas Erimias, Construction Engineer, shared, "Engineers make a difference in our world by solving problems, innovating tech, ensuring safety, and addressing global challenges." Tyler Beck, Safety Engineer, explained, "Students should explore an engineering path because of the broad variety of job availability. There are many different types of engineers, and companies are constantly in demand for them. Another reason is the gratification of solving problems to create a better work environment." Celebrating Engineers Week 2024! 🎉 We caught up with our engineers to explore how they make a difference in the world and why students should dive into the engineering path. Brandon Carter, Safety Engineer, shared, "I would say one way engineers make a difference in our world is by finding innovative solutions to problems. You always have to be on your toes and not only correct problems that have already happened but look for ways to prevent future problems. Engineers wear many hats, from managing, scheduling, technical work, compliance, and innovating our processes to be a leader in our industry. Here at VINCI USA, our engineers do all of these things and more to try and make a difference in our world through the work we do." Matt Benedict, Field Engineer, told us, "I highly encourage students to pursue the engineering career path because it allows them to implement and truly understand how their studies correlate to the Heavy Civil Industry. During my time working as a construction and field engineer, I have been able to better grasp the concepts that were studied in college and can relate them to the work we complete onsite. By doing so, it has strengthened my foundation, which will be beneficial in my future career. Therefore, based on my experience following the engineer career path, I think it will have a similar impact on future engineers and will set them up for the same success." It’s National Engineering Day and I love this week …….. I know what youre thinking - Kelly that’s not a very inspiring picture of Lottie you usually take her to exciting infrastructure or have her with an amazing airfield view and you are right, but there is method in the madness . As part of National Engineering Day, Tomorrows Engineers week , the Big Bang Fair , Lottie’s WES tour and all of the amazing events and inspirational posts it’s important to reflect on the fact that those of us in this industry will have been signposted at some point in the early years. Mine included the exciting Thursday nights glued to Tomorrows World with Judith Hann or Maggie Philbin OBE showing me all of the exiting possibilities in engineering and technology or the enthusiastic Johnny Ball telling me how maths can help me solve every day problems. They got me hooked and then #WISE sealed the deal with an incredible week as a 14 year old introducing me to actual engineering careers as part of their girls as technician engineers programme “GATE”. It’s important to show that whilst I loved getting out there with my toolkit and getting all kinds of dirty, engineering as a career is hugely diverse and isn’t all tools and grease. It’s massive and provides endless career opportunities. I was at home today doing a short day of teams meetings and admin before heading off out of the office for a few days and it’s important to show you can “engineer” from anywhere (in this case my garden office) and your skill set will open up limitless possibilities in your career . So if you are thinking about engineering and assuming it’s not flexible or inclusive and is all tools and construction, it’s not and as those who have benefited from signposting from those who have gone before, we have an obligation to signpost those who come next. If you can’t see it you can’t be it. So to all of you taking part in events this week a huge thank you from me and the next generation . ✨ National Engineering Day 2024: Engineering an Inclusive Future ✨ Today, we celebrate engineers who shape our world and inspire future generations. Did you know that only 15.7% of the UK’s engineering workforce are women and 11.4% are from minority ethnic backgrounds, there’s a clear need for more young people to see themselves in engineering. This year’s theme, Who do you look up to?, is all about recognising role models who inspire the next generation. Today, The Royal Academy of Engineering is unveiling art installations created by Kelly Anna, showcasing engineers as diverse role models. Nominated by the Academy network, 80 individuals were put forward, with the final figures selected by a panel and featured in stunning installations, including a larger-than-life sculpture, celebrating their contributions to diversity and innovation. We were absolutely thrilled to have had the Royal Academy of Engineering as a partner at Advanced Engineering 2024, where they truly showcased the inspiring power of engineering. It was a privilege to welcome students and apprentices who were eager to connect with industry professionals and gain valuable insights. Events like this give young people a chance to meet real-world role models and see first-hand the incredible opportunities that await them in the industry.
