According to Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the total floor area of permits issued for the construction of buildings rose by 13.8% year on year (YoY) in 2023, while the turnover index grew by 101.7% YoY during the same period. These positive indicators for the construction industry come in the midst of the aftermath of the two earthquakes that occurred around the region in 2023; with the governments delayed response and many buildings yet to be repaired or rebuilt, demand in Turkey's construction industry is likely to be strong for the foreseeable future. BORUMBA DAM CONTRACTS AWARDED Three major works contracts worth nearly $190 million have been awarded to Queensland-based companies as part of the next phase of the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project. This renewable energy project is expected to generate 2000MW of power and provide essential energy storage for Queensland’s future clean energy system. The Water2Wire Joint Venture (JV) has been appointed as the Dams Designer Delivery Partner, securing contracts worth $40 million. Their role includes the design and engineering for seven dams — six for a new upper reservoir and a replacement dam wall for the existing Borumba Dam. Water2Wire is a joint venture between leading engineering and design firms GHD, Mott MacDonald and Stantec, and was created to develop pumped hydro across the state. The Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) Designer contract worth $39.9 million has been awarded to AFRY-Aurecon JV. This contract covers key technical elements of the project, including turbine design and tunnel waterway layout. DECMIL, an Australian construction firm, was awarded a $111 million contract to design and construct two temporary worker camps on-site. Each camp will house 336 workers, offering facilities such as wellness rooms, gyms, social rooms, and laundry services. This approach aims to reduce the impact on local housing and minimize traffic in the area. The Snowy Hydro 2.0 project consisted construction of some massive underground chambers in recent times. The power house itself is just about the size of 2x Titanic Ships, the machine hall is 251mL x 52mH x 40mW and the transformer hall 223mL x 46mH x 30mW. Exposure to the construction sequence and methodology is a highlight.
