Coloring the Joy of Sinterklaas! As the festive season approaches, the magic of Sinterklaas brings joy and color to BAAT! This year, in the spirit of Sinterklaas, we gave our little artists a creative challenge—a Sinterklaas-themed clip art to fill with colors. And guess what? The results are absolutely stunning! From vibrant rainbows to playful hues, our kids brought their imagination to life, reminding us of the beauty of creativity and togetherness. Their masterpieces now adorn our office, spreading cheer and festive vibes. A big thank you to our mini artists and their supportive parents for making this activity so heartwarming. In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas is one of the most treasured and important holiday traditions, bringing magic, family, and joy to the season ✨. Unlike Santa with his reindeers, Sinterklaas rides a majestic white horse and travels across rooftops to deliver gifts to children 🎁. The festivities start in mid-November, when Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat 🚢 from Spain. This kicks off weeks of excitement and anticipation. During this time, children leave their shoes 🥾 by the chimney or door, hoping to find small gifts, chocolate letters 🍫, or tasty pepernoten 🍪 (small spiced cookies that are a holiday favorite) the next morning. The celebration peaks on December 5th, a night called Pakjesavond (Gift Evening) 🎁. On this special night, families gather to exchange gifts, share funny and heartfelt poems 📝, and enjoy delicious treats. It’s a beautiful mix of fun and tradition. However, this much-loved tradition has also sparked controversy. Historically, Sinterklaas has been accompanied by Zwarte Piet (Black Pete), a character often portrayed with blackface makeup, exaggerated features, and colorful clothing. While some believe the character was originally meant to represent a helper covered in soot from climbing down chimneys or a Moorish servant from historical stories, many argue that the portrayal reinforces harmful racial stereotypes and is offensive to people of African descent. In recent years, there has been growing backlash against this portrayal, both in the Netherlands and around the world. Many communities have replaced Zwarte Piet with “Roetveegpieten” (soot-smudged Petes), who have streaks of soot on their faces to represent climbing through chimneys. These changes aim to make the tradition more respectful and inclusive while keeping the joy and excitement of the celebration alive. The story of Sinterklaas shows how traditions can change over time while still keeping their heart and meaning—celebrating joy, family, and reflection✨. Selected by his peers, Andrew is an indispensable part of our Galaxy team who brings creativity, dependability, and positivity to everything he does. Andrew joined Galaxy Fireworks in the summer of 2020, inspired by childhood memories of visiting the showroom with his dad. While his focus is on school and other goals, his part-time role with Galaxy has been a perfect match for his passion for fireworks. From IT support and showroom organization to creating and designing the artwork for several of our fireworks products, Andrew’s impact is felt in every corner of the business.
