It’s the Babbage team's last day in office today before we go home to celebrate the holidays with our friends and family. As we send off 2024 we can recap on another year of fun and good times where our Social Committee managed to bring 20+ events to life for the Babbage team. It’s the first time we have ventured on a hiking trip, which was an overnight hike to Mt Pirongia. We brought back some of the traditional favourite events like Surf Trip to Whananaki, Fishing Trip on the Waitemata harbour and Cinema Night to watch another marvel movie. On the fundraising initiative we hosted a Pink Ribbon morning tea and Blue September breakfast. Sporting fixtures had us cheering on the Blackcaps, NZ warriors and European football final. Around town we ventured into some of our favourite bars for Friday drinks, attended a comedy festival and played Holey Moley Golf. The kids Xmas party was once again a success where the weather played its part and Mrs Claus handed out presents to all the Babbage kids. Our social committee has done an amazing job of creating an inviting social environment where all team members can join in the positive atmosphere and get to know their colleagues whilst taking part in some extracurricular activities they may not otherwise embark on! We’ve had tonnes of fun in 2024, and can’t wait to get see what 2025 brings!

Happy National Volunteer Week! I once overheard someone saying: “You couldn’t pay me all the money in the world to be a volunteer in sport!” Yet, many people do volunteer, this is why I like to ask administrators, coaches, umpires and officials: “Why do you volunteer at your club/association?” Here are ten of my favourite responses: 1️⃣ I love seeing the kids having fun, especially if there’s other challenges going on in their lives. 2️⃣ It’s the connection to community, encouraging kids to reach their goals and achieve as a team. 3️⃣ I love being part of my kids’ sport; I joined the committee to be involved and to give back to the community in a positive way. 4️⃣ I love watching my daughter with her friends, sport is such a great social connector. 5️⃣ It’s the sense of community, the fitness, wellbeing, friendships and team. 6️⃣ It’s the skills improvement, the sense of achievement the kids get. 7️⃣ I love seeing teenage girls come together, all from different schools, and form that bond. 8️⃣ I like to show how rewarding being an umpire is (umpire). 9️⃣ I just love it when it all comes together, and there’s that beautiful passage of play (coach). 💲 I want to see the club say afloat (Treasurer). Why do you volunteer in sport? #Volunteers #Sport #Thankyou

Thoughts for the month (EOY edition): 1. Rounding off the year with our final board meeting introducing two new trustees Catherine Cullen and Morgan Griffiths and a new fundraising strategy to take us into 2025. Naturally I dressed as Mrs Clause for the occasion 🎄 "If we do the same things we've always done, we'll get the same results in 12 months time." This was my message to the board and so we are taking some bold and deliberate strategic decisions to build our resilience next year. Hope to share the results of key learnings in due course ✨️ 2. Using this month to reflect on the year. I have been stretched beyond measure but I'm feeling proud of all we've achieved by putting our shoulder to the work 💪 3. Feeling extremely grateful for our incredible frontline team of staff, freelancers and volunteers who've launched new services (mentoring and befriending) and transformed the lives of many women. We have recently started sharing 'Stories from the Kitchen' and these words from a recent grad gave me all the feels: "It was so much more than baking. I felt like I belonged and there was so much that made me think I was worthy to be part of the team and was valued. It’s helped to reduce anxiety in new social situations and built a lot of self belief and self worth. For me, all the pieces came together towards the end of the course. It was like a lightbulb moment where I recognised the achievements I’d made over the last few years and on the course."* 🥹 This is our why. This is the reason we keep going. This is the reason we will keep building into 2025 and beyond. We are 10 years old next year! Any suggestions on how we should celebrate are welcome. Spoiler alert: we've got a goodie planned!🎈 *sign up to our newsletter for more Stories from the Kitchen.

Building Community, One Step at a Time One of my key accomplishments was completing the TEDx Black Mountain website. It’s ready to launch, and I’m thrilled to see it go live on Wednesday during Seáns chat at Martin and Michelle's Christmas coffee gathering. Later that day, it will officially debut here on LinkedIn! Seeing this project come to life feels like a milestone, we are now under the starter's orders, and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts when it’s live. Beyond this, I’ve been busy with my usual work in education while also drafting the blueprint for an exciting new service I’ll be offering in 2025. It’s still under wraps, but I’m putting the final touches on it, stay tuned! One of the highlights of my week was volunteering to capture some moments at Creighton’s of Finaghy’s annual Santa Arriving Event. I had the privilege of capturing moments as Santa arrived (on the back of a recovery truck, no less!) and spent the evening spreading cheer. It was a magical experience that reminded me of the joy of community-focused initiatives. Another exciting moment was joining Peter Lockhart and friends on the Ulster Rugby Red Hand Podcast to discuss my favourite sport! It was such a fun experience sharing insights, stories, and enthusiasm for something I love. Connecting over shared passions is always a highlight. I did, however, get the 7-point swing the wrong way around but was close enough with my Ireland prediction. Reflecting on this week, I’m reminded of the deeper why behind my TEDx aspirations: creating amazing experiences for the community I grow with. Whether it’s through education, volunteering, or storytelling, it’s all about building connections that inspire and uplift. #CommunityBuilding #TEDx #EducationForAll #EdTech #Volunteering #Leadership

Building community through collaboration 🎄 We’re all about creating connections—between people, places, and ideas. This year, we have a fabulous 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway on socials going on which is shining a light on Barnard Castle’s incredible small businesses while bringing festive joy to our community. We’re only on Day 2, and so far, we’ve seen some fantastic engagement by partnering with amazing local businesses—like a chocolate shop, an artist, a homeware store, and a salon. These collaborations not only spread festive cheer but also boost awareness of the small businesses and people that make Teesdale special. ✨ Here’s why collaboration works: - These partnerships help grow our social media reach while increasing visibility for the small businesses involved. - The giveaway is helping us connect with new people, introducing them to the brilliant small businesses we’re collaborating with and to everything we offer here at The Witham. - Each prize gives the winner a taster of what these local businesses are about -It’s great to see so many different people joining in—from some of our café staff and volunteers to regular users and lots of names we don’t yet recognise or have on our mailing list! We are building upon our relationship with stakeholders. With Small Business Saturday just around the corner, it’s a reminder of how partnerships like these are key to a thriving community both offline and online! #smallbusinesssaturday #shoplocal #barnardcastle #supportlocal #communityspirit #12daysofchristmas #artsandculture #charitywork #festivefun #pantotime #teesdale #localbusiness #communitylove #collaboration #socialmediaengagement #giveawaytime #spreadjoy #celebratelocal #localcollaboration #smallbusinesslove #smallbusinesssupport #locallove #teesside #northengland #creativecommunity #artscentre #buildingconnections #audiencedevelopment #supportsmallbusiness #barnardcastlecommunity #pantomime

🌟 Community Dinners - Christmas Lunch: Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Success 🎄 Two weeks before Christmas, I was faced with a major challenge: organizing a holiday lunch for dozens of guests on a tight budget and limited time. Here's how I turned this into a rewarding success! 💪✨ 🔴 Challenges The project was approved and subsidized just two weeks before Christmas, despite the request being submitted much earlier. This left me with minimal time to reactivate operations, reconnect with external vendors, negotiate service prices, and perform a detailed risk analysis. ⏳ One major challenge was that the food provider significantly raised their prices, pushing costs far beyond the budget. I had to get creative with negotiations to lower costs without compromising the quality of service. 🍽️💸 📚 Learning Curve Even with meticulous planning, unexpected situations arose that demanded quick thinking and adaptability. For instance, some guests became emotional during the event, and my team and I had to step in, offering active support and compassion to make everyone feel comfortable and valued. 💖 One moment stands out: a guest became overwhelmed (this was outside the scope of my risk analysis), and with a few kind words and some time to talk, we helped them feel included and at ease. This experience reinforced the importance of showing empathy and creative problem-solving, especially in high-pressure situations. 💬🤝 🏆 Success In the end, all the challenges paid off. Thanks to the incredible support of volunteers and partners, the Christmas lunch exceeded expectations. The feedback survey revealed 100% positive responses, with guests asking for the event to be a regular tradition. 🎉🙌 This experience reminded me just how powerful teamwork and perseverance can be in creating meaningful moments for others. 🌟 💖 Special Thanks This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the amazing support of several key individuals: Suzanne Visser - Hoogendoorn: For helping me overcome the fear of failure. 💪 Helena Birnie: For actively supporting and advising on the organizational work. 📋 Corjan Rink: For invaluable advice on marketing and strategy. 📈 Your guidance and encouragement played a vital role in turning my ideas into reality. Thank you for your unwavering support! 🙏✨ 💬 Have you ever had to organize an event on a tight timeline or budget? How did you handle the unexpected challenges? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments below! 👇 #EventPlanning #Teamwork #Leadership #HolidayEvents #Challenges #Gratitude #ChristmasLunch
🎄✨ A Heartwarming Start to a New Tradition! ✨🎄 This year, Community Dinners proudly organized its first-ever Christmas lunch, bringing together 25 incredible guests and dedicated volunteers. With this event, we’ve officially started a tradition that will continue for years to come—a time to celebrate the season, foster connections, create possibilities, and lasting memories. During the lunch, we laughed 😊, got emotional, and shared life stories, gaining new perspectives that left us all deeply inspired. One touching example was a guest who had been living an isolated life after COVID. When she arrived, she became emotional and began to cry. 💔 However, with the support of others and our wonderful volunteers, she found the courage to stay and ended up enjoying the Christmas spirit ❤️. Moments like this remind us why we do what we do. Within just a few hours, strangers became friends, and the room was filled with warmth, understanding, and a sense of belonging. One of the most beautiful moments was seeing guests exchange contacts and plan coffee meet-ups as the event came to a close. ☕ It’s a testament to the true power of community—to bring people together, make a positive impact, and create meaningful relationships. Our goals for this Christmas lunch were simple: to connect, uplift, reduce loneliness, and inspire. Not only were those goals achieved—they were exceeded. This is just the beginning of a beautiful tradition. Here’s to many more years of bringing people together, one Christmas lunch at a time. 💡 Are you someone who could help us with new ideas, or does your organization have the capacity to support us? We are always open to opportunities and would love to collaborate with like-minded individuals and groups to make future events even more impactful. Thank you for your support 🎅🎁 City of Rotterdam, Ricardo van Agthoven Nicksreclame, gro-up , Huis het wijk Het Lage Land, Eten bij Loo, without your active support, none of this would have been possible. #ChristmasCommunityDinner #HolidayTraditions #BuildingConnections #Gratitude #Inspiration #CommunityImpact #Togetherness #Kersttraditie #SamenSterk #Gemeenschap #Dankbaarheid #Inspiratie #Kerstlunch #Verbinding #PositieveImpact #LiefdevolSamenkomen #Vrijwilligerswerk #SamenGroei #Kerstgedachte

🎤 All the gear and no idea! 😅 I'm excited to level up my online breathwork sessions with a brand new microphone and mixer, but before I go live, I need to make sure everything works smoothly. I’m looking for *three volunteers* to help me test my online setup! You'll get to experience a breathwork session, and in return, I’ll fine-tune my tech. If you’re up for it, DM me the word BREATH to volunteer your time now! 🙏 Let’s breathe together (and make sure my mic doesn’t cut out in the process!) #breathwork #onlinewellbeing #volunteer #somabreath #breathcoaching #techupgrade

The Power of Community and Unexpected Support Last year, our Truck or TREAT event had just five attendees. This year, we almost didn't have it at all. But sometimes, support comes from unexpected places, reminding us of the power of community and perseverance. After the floods, our spirits were low, and we considered skipping the event. Then, during a call with by team at Method Q, they asked if I needed anything. I casually mentioned candy would be helpful. What happened next was truly heartwarming. Over the next week, boxes upon boxes of candy arrived - more than 650 individually wrapped pieces! The generosity was overwhelming. During our board meeting, as I shared this unexpected bounty, we collectively decided to move forward with Truck or TREAT. The result? Over 100 people came together for a night of joy, laughter, and community bonding. It was a powerful reminder that even in challenging times, small acts of kindness can spark significant positive change. This experience reinforced a valuable lesson: never underestimate the impact of reaching out and offering support. Sometimes, it's the catalyst needed to bring a community together and create unforgettable moments. I'm grateful for the unexpected support that made this event possible and for every community member who came out to celebrate. Here's to the power of community, resilience, and the magic that happens when we support one another. https://lnkd.in/eTMwk3ZK #CommunitySpirit #Resilience #TruckorTREAT

Work-life balance isn’t just about working 9-5 - it’s about building emotional resilience and finding gratitude in every day. At the end of last year, I had the privilege of chatting with Simon Brading from Brightec. We explored the topic of emotional resilience - something I’ve come to really value over nearly two decades of running a business. In that time, I’ve experienced the highs and lows that naturally come with entrepreneurship. One thing I’ve learned; staying calm and approaching challenges with a clear head can make all the difference. A situation never gets worse when you face it with perspective. And yes, “gratitude” is a word I might overuse (and probably owe some fines for!), but it’s truly at the heart of what keeps me grounded and focused. I’m always up for a chat, whether it’s about business, emotional resilience, or finding balance in the chaos. If you fancy a coffee, my DMs are always open!

What can volunteering teach us about good leadership? (Feat. video from my absolute fav community group, Lindfield Repair Cafe 💙) I'm a huge advocate of volunteering if you have the time and space to do it. Not only do most of these orgs exist to fill a gaping hole in the community, but you get to know new people, learn new skills and take insight from your volunteering back into your professional life. I've volunteered for a number of different causes over the years and let's just say the experiences have been... varied. The orgs I feel motivated to stick around in usually have one thing in common: amazing leadership. One fantastic example is my local repair cafe, which I joined in 2022. I was immediately welcomed by its founder and given a really clear role: use social media to market the cafe and get more people through its doors. There were a few 'must communicates' but how I did that was up to me! It might sound like a daunting task, but it has actually been so refreshing. I have ownership over the platforms, the freedom to be creative and test new ideas, and a support network of passionate volunteers who input but don't dictate how things are done. It's honestly one of the most supportive and collaborative environments I've ever worked in, and the ideas and creativity that emerge as a result continue to motivate me even when I'm time-poor or stressed. When I think about improving my own leadership, I try to remember my repair cafe colleagues and how they make me want to turn up each month to do my absolute best: 🌟 Be clear about the end goal, but don't dictate how to reach it 🌟 Respect your team's creativity and embrace new ways of doing things 🌟 Allow enough flex in your strategy to test, learn and take risks 🌟 And most importantly, trust your team members' expertise If you volunteer, what has it taught you? #volunteering #teambuilding #socialmedia #socialmediamarketing #leadership #leadershipgoals
