In many ways, I don't even recognize myself. I've changed so much in one year. Here are the things I've learned after one year as a law firm owner: 1. The most important resource I have is my network. They've shown up for me in ways I couldn't have foreseen before launch. 2. Technology has saved my sanity. Having a solid tech stack is key. I have so much automated, triggered, templated, and tasked that much of my practice is on auto-pilot. I've never had the luxury of so much tech and I LOVE IT! 3. The clients will come. My biggest fear before launch was around having enough work to support my practice. Between referrals, implementing solid marketing practices, and investing in marketing support, the work is coming. 4. Be a sponge. Have the humility to listen more than you talk. I learn from friends, from listening to podcasts, by engaging the right vendors, and working closely with clients to ease the process. 5. Comparisons aren't fair. Set aside the competitive instincts. You can't compare your year one to another firm's year 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 or beyond. I'm unique. My firm is unique. My path is my own. It's evolving and comparisons don't help prioritize my goals. Domus and many others were treated to a free Breakfast Roll and Hot Drink at Tom Kerridge's Butchers Tap in Marlow, celebrating Lightfoot Solicitors' 177th Anniversary! - world class bacon bap by the way 😋 Seeing all the happy faces, smiles, and excited chatter made me wonder how something so small (a breakfast bap and coffee) could make such a big positive impact on so many people's day. The little things in life matter to people! In my sector, minor details such as another mile of travel, offering another £1,000 - £2,000 salary, flexibility to pick up the kids, checking in with successful candidates before their start date, and providing meaningful interview feedback, to name a few, can make an enormous difference! One small act can be easily forgotten but a catalogue of small acts creates a lasting positive impression. If you can build the love and positivity with onboarding new employees all the way up to their start date, you will find yourself hiring someone prepared and determined to go above and beyond for you and the team in their new role.

🐴 Belgian Draft horses can pull 8,000 pounds of weight. 🐴🐴 Two together can pull up to 24.000 pounds, three times as much: BUT ….. two horses who grew up and train together can pull - wait for it - a whopping 32.000 pounds. Four times, that of one horse alone. 😂 The nationality of the horse isn’t important, in this context. 💻 What is important, was the expansive and balanced discussion, exploring law firm partner remuneration structures, we had today on the Law Firm Ambition webinar together with Jonathan Blair hosted by Andy Poole and featuring Andy Harris. 💷 Does rewarding individual partner performance work? Something that is logically in the mind of nearly every law firm partner. 🐎 As a footnote, my first ever presentation at Higgs LLP in 2006 featured Canadian Horses describing the same logic as above. 📈 The Higgs team has done a remarkable job building a consistently strengthening reputation as a successful regional firm and growing turnover by 4x’s, a bit similar to the Belgian Draft Horses described above.

The first settlers knew the secret to success: location matters. 🗺️ They picked where to work based on the resources around them, creating communities that thrived.
