“Many people who are part of these support groups see #peersupport as a complementary addition to the care they receive from health professionals” This I hear from the People In Pain Network attendees. If you have doubt about the value of #PeerToPeerSupport this is a must read. Article provides tips for discussing peer support, collaboration with clinicians and much more.
Brilliant article by the BMJ on exactly what #PeerToPeerSupport looks like and "why" we need to promote it, support it and assist in it's evolution. As a person living with Persistent Pain I notice exactly how my symptoms change for the better when I am simply amongst peers who understand, support and share, and I hear the same feedback from all the people I engage with on this. Sean Jennings started "Pain Cafe's" a while ago, and it's has started a revolution. It's no surprise they are popular. You cannot bake the perfect cake without all the best ingredients. But best ingredients do not have to be expensive. Bringing people together who have lived experience means we are bringing the "experts" together, and there is tremendous power in that. All PCN's need to consider these types of Support groups, and help to facilitate them. With the phenomenal support of Ollie Hart we have started One such group in Sheffield. Inviting patients to a group twice a month. I also host my own group weekly at a local community leisure centre in Sheffield. We average 10-12 people each week. It is changing lives ( without medical interventions). Using the Flippin' Pain 6 Key Messages we provide bitesize chunks of education to meet people where they are at. We share skills of the LEX Advocates ( what has worked) and also signpost resources whereby people can explore their curiosities. We encourage people to engage with that curiosity, and develop that internal locus of control that is the essential "ingredient" Andrew Cuff Connect Health Deepak Ravindran Aimee Robson Ollie Hart Narinder Sheena Darrell Price Chris Barker Richard Pell Ben Allen Dr Benjamin Ellis MBE Pharmacist Shilpa Patel 🇳🇴 Pete Moore Alan Gordon Georgie Oldfield Richmond Stace Fiona Symington Personalised Care Institute Jamie Watson Alec Kassin Nick Livadas NHS Professionals NHS Virginia McIntyre Bronnie Lennox Thompson Keith Meldrum https://lnkd.in/epzGWHBv
