NEW: School Shooters: Recognizing Extreme Overvalued Beliefs by @TahirRahmanMD via Psychology Today A concerning shift can occur in the human mind after spending significant time in the sewers of the internet. Beliefs that start from a grievance can head down a dangerous path to become “extreme overvalued beliefs”—firmly held convictions that are shared and amplified within online communities and can have devastating consequences. This is also known as a contagion effect or "copycat" phenomenon. (As I will explain, threat assessment professionals utilize behavioral patterns to thwart attacks.) At the heart of these observed patterns are pathological fixations that are shaped through interactions with others https://ow.ly/wEAK50Tg2eg #MentalHealthAwareness #OnlineSafety #BehavioralHealth #ThreatAssessment #PathologicalFixations #ContagionEffect #ExtremeOvervaluedBeliefs #InternetCulture #PsychologyToday #TahirRahmanMD

Mental health among college students has reached a critical point, with 60% reporting overwhelming anxiety and 40% experiencing depression, according to the American College Health Association. The rise of trauma-related symptoms, particularly in response to academic pressure, sexual assault, and racial discrimination, is creating long-term impacts on well-being and academic performance. We must do more to address this growing issue. How can universities better support their students? #mentalhealth #highered #traumainformedcare #collegewellness

Last Friday, I had a great opportunity to attend the Culturally Responsive Approaches to Mental Health conference held by Universities of Wisconsin at UW-Stout. It was interesting to learn about the experiences of students across different campuses in Wisconsin. I am glad to have learnt more about the imposter phenomenon and peer-support as a community building strategy for students in the breakout sessions I joined. The highlight session for me was, “Impact of Imposter Phenomenon on BIPOC students/ racial identity Academic Achievement” by Kevin Cokley, PhD. First, I learnt to never call it an “impostor syndrome” because that meant that it was Pathological which it isn’t. “Imposter phenomenon is not a psychiatric disorder”. Second, I learnt to not reduce it to only self doubt but to consider the internal and external factors which may contribute to it. Finally, I learnt individual strategies to overcome the impostor phenomenon which I list below: 1. Document your success 2. Own your accomplishments 3. Talk to a colleague/friend 4. Learn from your mistake 5. Seek treatment for mental health I was able to reflect on my experiences as an international student, and my experiences with the imposter phenomenon. Moving forward I plan to uphold these strategies and share with my peers who may have similar challenges. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #imposterphenomenon

IMPACT OF ADDICTION As we navigate through our academic and professional journeys, it's crucial to recognize and address the significant impact of addiction on student life. Whether it's substance abuse, gaming addiction, or other forms, these challenges can profoundly affect students' well-being and academic performance. Addiction not only disrupts academic focus but also strains personal relationships and mental health. It can lead to missed classes, poor grades, and a decline in overall productivity. More importantly, it hinders the development of crucial life skills and coping mechanisms necessary for success in both academic and professional environments. To support students facing these challenges, it's essential for educational institutions🏢 and communities to foster open dialogue, provide accessible resources for treatment and support, and promote a culture of understanding and empathy. By addressing addiction proactively, we can create a more supportive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive and succeed. Let's continue to raise awareness, offer support, and empower students to overcome these obstacles and achieve their full potential. Together, we can make a positive impact on student 🧑💻 well-being and academic success. #StudentLife #AddictionAwareness #SupportStudents #MentalHealthMatters #Education
