Who Really Makes Laws in Indonesia? 🤔 Parliamentarians are often called “lawmakers”—but in Indonesia, are they the only ones responsible? We've heard presidents across different administrations claim that law-making is primarily parliament's domain. But that's not entirely true. By law, both the executive and legislative branches share responsibility for initiating and shaping the law-making process, although their involvement can vary. While parliament often gets the blame for rushed or controversial bills, the executive branch is equally involved in deciding which laws are deliberated and ultimately passed. In fact, both the DPR and the government even collaborate on establishing the all-important National Legislation Priority List (Prolegnas), determining which laws take priority. Note: This video provides a general overview of the law-making process in Indonesia, focusing on the executive's role. For simplicity, some details were streamlined. There are many more steps, like the role of DPR commissions and the president's ability to issue regulations in lieu of law (Perpu).
