Ep. 5 - Play It Forward - Part 1
How do beer and hymns come together to build a community? In this episode of the Four Bars podcast, we uncover the creative journey of Ken and Casey Weatherford, the innovative minds behind Beer and Hymns. Their story takes us from the cobblestone streets of Edinburgh, where the global tradition of singing hymns in social settings first inspired them, back to their church's Sunday school class, and eventually to a large, thriving community event. With the help of Chad Markley, they navigated early skepticism and crafted a unique space where music and fellowship create powerful connections among diverse individuals.
We also explore the intersection of community, music, and professional life. This episode reveals how our everyday roles in fields like real estate and architecture naturally intersect with the mission of fostering inclusivity and connection. Personal anecdotes illustrate the magic of Beer and Hymns, where live music becomes a universal language that brings together people from all walks of life. Whether it's a playful interaction with a fellow attendee or the discovery of a familiar hymn, these moments highlight the joy and enrichment found in creating welcoming environments.
Finally, our conversation shifts to the cultural exchanges experienced in Edinburgh in 2010. We reflect on the lessons learned from working with the Methodist Church and adapting to the slower, more deliberate pace of Scottish life. This chapter reminds us of the importance of patience and presence, as we celebrate life’s simple pleasures—like a rare sunny day or a conversation over pints. The episode doesn't end without touching on how these principles extend into promoting growth and reducing bias through innovative endeavors like Edges Inc. and Unform your Bias, showcasing how storytelling can transform perspectives and foster inclusivity.

🍂 I love Autumn! 🍂 The colours, cozy jumpers, the pumpkin pies, patches & lattes 🎃, and that unmistakable shift in the season. Of course, there are the not-so-fun parts… dark mornings, early nights, and the rise in gas bills. But let’s keep it positive! Autumn also brings a sense of renewal, which I for one love: that back to school, back to work vibe, and of course, back to the exciting world of The AQR (Association for Qualitative Research).
One question I get asked often is, “What are the benefits of being an AQR member?” Well, in a nutshell (or should I say conker!), here are just a few:
🤹♀️ VIP access to top-notch training delivered by highly skilled experts in the field. Recent courses have included advanced moderation skills, writing for research and social listening.
🤔 Priority access and discounted rates to our thought leadership events —often followed by networking drinks! Cheers to that!🍷
🏆 Exclusive access to the prestigious AQR awards, which can help raise your profile within the industry and with clients. Watch this space for the announcement of our AQR new award in honour of the late great Wendy Gordon
📰 Fresh & insightful content, covering a fascinating array of topics and speakers; including our magazine Curious, our programe of webinars, and our podcast Qualversations (probably the only podcast devoted to qual on the planet!) https://lnkd.in/esawQ3Ym
🔦 Business spotlights, that shine the light on your organisation with featured profiles on Linked In and on our website.
🤝 Most importantly, you become part of a passionate community—people who truly care about and are devoted to the art of qualitative research.
So, what's not to love? 🤩

If you're already a member, I’d love to hear what makes it special for you. Not a member yet? Don’t be shy—drop me a line! I’m always up for a chat about why joining AQR could be your best move this season. 🍁
Feeling stuck in the lift of life? This may be the answer.
I had a very memorable Friday evening last week. I took some of my clients, alumni and friends to hear Britain’s #1 podcaster Steven Bartlett, host of #DiaryOfACEO.
Brilliant.
Steve was great but what made the night memorable wasn’t his talk, it wasn’t finding a cab in the torrential rain afterwards, but actually what happened before.
On our way to the event my clients and I all got stuck in a lift…
for 50 minutes.
We all thought it was pretty funny for the first few minutes until it started getting really hot and the lift company said it would be at least 30 minutes before they got us out.
Our show started in 15 minutes and we’d spent $1000s of dollars on tickets.
We weren't sure whether we'd be allowed in if the show had already started.
We also weren't sure if anyone had any health conditions that would flare up as our time progressed and the temperature in the lift skyrocketed.
We tried to do what we could but ultimately the solution related not to how we could get out but WHO could help us.
We rang the lift company, we rang the reception, and after 25 minutes with everyone getting very sweaty we rang the fire brigade. We even rang one of the executives of the hotel that we knew.
We are not sure which WHO was most helpful, but knowing we had a number of WHOs on the case helped everyone stay calm and ultimately got us out.
Fortunately, Steven's show started 20 minutes late so we only missed a few minutes at the beginning, and the organisers let us in.
And almost as if Steven knew of our predicament, one of the key lessons he shared about the tactics of the world’s highest performing people related to our recent lift experience.
When facing a challenge, or trying to learn something new, or setting yourself a new goal, most of us are quick to ask ourselves how to do it.
This is very normal and predictable. Our schooling teaches us to ask how. We sit tests and write assignments individually to demonstrate we know how to do things.
But the world’s highest performers know there is a better way.
There is a much faster way that takes less effort, less stress, is more enjoyable, and potentially delivers even better results than you thought possible.
The best performers in the world don’t ask how I can do this, they ask WHO can help me achieve this? WHO has done this already that I can learn from or partner with? WHO has the knowledge, resources, capability, contacts or skills I don't?
To paraphrase Benjamin Hardy, PhD in his book #WhoNotHow dedicated to this topic...
“Every one needs a WHO, this includes you, whatever you are trying to do you need a WHO.”
Thank you to the WHOs that helped us on Friday night.
And thank you to the WHOs that have helped me whenever I've been stuck in life.
Next time you feel stuck, in groundhog day, unable to see how you can move forward, the answer may be as simple as shifting your focus from how to WHO.
A little girl. A Mariah Carey concert. And a sign. What happened next?
A life lesson in visibility.
Here’s a story I found while scrolling Instagram.
(Proof the rabbit hole isn’t always a time-waster!)
A little girl attends a Mariah Carey concert.
In a crowd of thousands, she holds up a sign:
“I’m named after you Mariah!”
Most would think it’d go unnoticed.
But a celebrity in the crowd spotted her.
That simple sign? 👀
It got her on stage with her idol.
Here’s the twist:
We think getting on stage will get us places.
But often, it’s someone in the crowd who sees you—
And helps you get there.
This isn’t just a heartwarming story.
It’s a reminder that visibility matters.
The truth? Visibility isn’t about perfection.
It’s about showing up where it counts.
Here are 3 ways to start today:
► Share your expertise.
Post your insights, lessons, and wins consistently.
Authenticity wins hearts—and opportunities.
► Network with purpose.
Join communities, attend events, and spark conversations.
The right people will open doors.
► Own the mic.
Public speaking is transformative.
Panels, podcasts, and conferences are your stages.
The takeaway? Visibility matters.
You never know who’s watching—or what’s possible.
What’s one way you’re showing up this week?
P.S. I help female leaders boost their visibility by building personal brands.
Ready to stand out? Let’s connect!

We only invited customers to our NYC User event. Originally it felt like this was a missed opportunity (why not also invite prospects).
But multiple customers said their favorite part was that it was only customers.
Why?
1) Better sharing - Since all attendees were users of Navattic, they could easily share ideas, use cases, and learn from each other.
2) Reduced pressure for attendees - No one had to worry about selling or impressing prospects. Instead, they could concentrate on educating and connecting with one another.
3) Improved vibes - Multiple attendees commented on the positive atmosphere and how it felt like a "good group." The customer-only let everyone instantly have something in common when they arrived.
