🚀 The "Long Night of Careers" at the University of Zurich is always a special highlight for students and for us, so we were delighted to be there again last week. Our on-site recruitment team, Head of HR Anja Halliger and Senior Specialist Recruiter Olga Pedretti, was actively supported by a big Baker McKenzie Switzerland team! Trainee Lawyers Alissa Schweda and Askoa Krinner, together with Olga, gave tips on how students can make their CVs more attractive so that they stand out to employers in the future. Partner Christoph Kurth spoke in his presentation about our culture and work-life-balance integration. Associate Hesam Mirzai gave insights into a lawyer's tasks in an M&A transaction in his case study on "Spin-offs under Swiss law." Trainee Lawyer Danijela Mrdak presented our short-term trainee and trainee lawyer programs to all interested participants, and Anja Halliger explained our application procedures. Afterward, everyone had the opportunity to chat with our team over an aperitif and ask questions. It was an exciting and all-round successful event, and we are already looking forward to next year! #BakerMcKenzie #BakerMcKenzieSwitzerland #LNOC #LawFirmLikeNoOther #LifewithBaker #yourchoice

Our experience shows that the ideal time for England & Wales qualified lawyers to explore international opportunities is between 2-5PQE. Before reaching this level, such opportunities can be rare, and after this period, the window for an international move tends to narrow. In local markets, the pyramid structure of law firms means that senior positions are fewer compared to mid-level roles, making it more challenging to move up as you gain more experience. The same is true for in-house teams, where there is typically only one General Counsel but many more subordinate lawyers. For junior lawyers, those with less than two years of experience are seldom hired by firms, as they usually rely on their own graduate and training programs, resulting in low attrition at this level. Lawyers become significantly more attractive to firms and clients once they have around four years of experience and begin to develop specialized expertise. At the 2-5 PQE mark (or 4-7 years for those in jurisdictions without training contracts, such as Australia and New Zealand), lawyers represent excellent value as hires. This 2-5 PQE period is when lawyers truly hit their stride, making it the ideal time to pursue that dream move and capitalise on peak marketability. Why Asia at Linklaters should be on your radar! I had the opportunity to attend the Linklaters Insight Evening, and I left with inspiration and insights into what makes the firm and its global opportunities stand out. A big thank you to Symone Budhrani for the CV and interview workshop. The advice was extremely practical and gave me fresh ideas for approaching the recruitment process. The panel speakers highlighted the unique advantages of working in Linklaters smaller international offices, particularly in Asia. They explained that smaller teams mean more responsibility, skill development, and closer exposure to the business’s core operations. The experience also enables exposure across multiple juridictions. This point was reinforced when I spoke to Connor Daly, who shared how this close-knit environment allows trainees to take on more hands-on work. For anyone looking to build a dynamic legal career, Asia offers a fantastic platform for professional growth. The evening also spotlighted Linklaters strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. Louisa Awolaja shared how the firm’s Race Action Plan and initiatives supporting neurodiversity are central to its values and how these efforts are woven into their recruitment and workplace culture. It’s clear that Linklaters is not only focused on legal excellence but is also committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. Overall, it was an inspiring evening that reinforced how Linklaters is shaping the future of law — offering global career opportunities, especially in Asia, and a deep commitment to inclusivity. #linklaters #lawfirm #globalopportunities #diversity #inclusion #lawcareers #insightevenings
