BALAJCZA Linguistic Services (Global)’s Post

👅 Are you bilingual? The answer to this question may surprise you.   What does the dictionary say about bilingualism? ➡ According to the PWN Dictionary of the Polish language, “bilingual” means “speaking two languages.”   The level and fluency don’t matter!   If someone says that they are bilingual, it does not necessarily mean that they have mastered both languages perfectly and at an EQUAL level.   (Such cases are rare!)   ▶ It is simply a person who is able to create intelligible utterances in familiar languages ◀   So yes, language learners are also classified as bilingual!   ❗ But...   What about children who have parents of different nationalities?   Or they use one language at home and another outside the home? 🏡   Such children are also bilingual! Except that... 👪 In such case, we talk about so-called “natural” or “family” bilingualism – that is, contact with two languages within the family and the environment from the earliest years of life.   Without the participation of schools or other institutions that “organize” learning.   📒 To sum up: Bilingualism = can be acquired through schooling or in courses Natural bilingualism = communicating in 2 languages from a young age in the family   So, are you bilingual? Or even multilingual? 🌍   #balajcza #languages #languagelearning #bilingualism #naturalbilingualism

So, at what point do you recommend putting language fluency on a resume, Timea Balajcza? I'm not applying for positions as a translator/interpreter.

I grew up in an bilingual environment, so from this perspective I think I am at least bilingual if not trilingual :)
