The answer to this question is… It’s possible! But it’s not guaranteed. While there isn’t one specific cause of prolapse, there are several well-known risk factors: ▪️vaginal birth(s) Births that involve prolonged pushing or use of instrumented assistance such as a vacuum or forceps, as well as rapid 2nd stage labor can contribute to prolapse. ▪️chronic constipation or straining to void The excessive pressure from a backed up digestive system and/or aggressive straining on the toilet to empty can contribute to the development, or exacerbation of an already existing prolapse. ▪️excessive coughing, sneezing or vomiting All of these activities place a good amount of pressure on the pelvic organs and pelvic floor. Uncontrolled allergies, nausea and respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, etc. increase risk of prolapse. ▪️repetitive heavy lifting or high impact activities Lifting, jumping and running don’t necessarily cause prolapse, however doing these activities at high intensities without proper awareness of intra-abdominal pressure can increase the risk. ▪️hormonal changes Hormonal shifts throughout life—particularly postpartum and peri-menopausal transitions—affect the strength of the connective tissues that support the pelvic organs. Since every individual’s medical history, lifestyle and habits vary, whether or not a prolapse can reverse without surgical intervention depends on how well we address the above-mentioned factors.

Abdominal pain is any discomfort felt between the chest and pelvis, ranging from mild to severe. It can occur in specific areas, like the upper or lower abdomen or across the entire stomach. While some cases may be minor, severe or persistent pain could indicate serious gastrointestinal issues. Common causes of abdominal pain include gas, constipation, and indigestion, which may occur after eating. Infections like stomach viruses or food poisoning are also culprits, often bringing nausea or vomiting. Allergies, such as lactose intolerance or gluten sensitivity, may also trigger discomfort. However, more serious conditions can cause abdominal pain. Appendicitis results in sharp pain in the lower right abdomen, while kidney stones cause severe pain that radiates to the groin. Pancreatitis affects the upper abdomen, and bowel obstructions prevent digestion, leading to intense discomfort. Even cancers of the stomach or colon may present with abdominal pain alongside changes in bowel habits. If you experience persistent or severe abdominal pain, it's important to consult a doctor. Recurring pain may signal an underlying issue, even if it’s not too intense. Be mindful of additional symptoms like fever, vomiting, bloody stool or urine, difficulty breathing, or chest pain, as these may indicate a more urgent condition. Emergency care is required if your pain spreads to your back, your abdomen is tender to touch, or if you vomit blood or notice blood in your stool. Difficulty breathing or irregular heartbeat are also red flags. Regarding abdominal pain, it's always best to seek medical advice. If you're concerned about abdominal pain, consider seeing a gastroenterologist for a thorough evaluation.
