Today in Strasbourg, the European Parliament elected Ursula von der Leyen for another five years as President of the European Commission. As a European civic tech organisation, we are closely following the President’s priorities and activities linked to our priorities. The 2024-2029 political guidelines highlight numerous points at the intersection of democracy and technology: 🛡️ President von der Leyen prioritised the "European Democracy Shield" in her speech and guidelines. As initiators of the Democratic Shield, our task force is ready to be a strong civil society partner in its implementation. Democratic challenges require strong partnerships, and we are here to support and improve European solutions where we can. Want to know more about it? European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has been elected to a second term, in the EU's top job! Congratulations to her! 401 members of the European Parliament confirmed her for a second term yesterday in Strasbourg. The election was much less close than had been expected, showcasing her ability to unify varying ends of the political spectrum, to secure policies addressing the multitude of dilemmas Europe is facing today. ✅ Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as President of the Commission by the European Parliament for a 5-year mandate. As such, she will lead the European institution in charge of proposing new legislation and policies, as well as controlling their implementation. 🤔 Will it simply stay business as usual, then? The answer is NO: in the political guidelines for the next mandate of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen calls for a Union that is faster and simpler, more supportive of people and companies. 👇 Some of my personal favourite announcement below: 🌿 « The future of the clean tech industry must be made in Europe ». The next Commission will propose a Clean Industrial Deal for competitive industries and quality jobs within the first 100 days of its mandate, to ensure a just transition benefiting both European citizens and the economy.  💶 After a geopolitical Commission, here comes an investment Commission to complete the green and digital transition and ensure the resilience of the Union to future challenges. 🚄 For travel lovers: you have dreamed about it, the next Commission will do it: the Single Digital Booking and Ticketing Regulation will enable Europeans to buy one single ticket on one single platform for a journey across the EU, while protecting your passengers rights for the whole trip. Because the EU will always be by your side wherever you go. 💬 The next Commission will strengthen the voice of the new generation in the EU decision-making: young people from all Member States will be gathered in an advisory board to directly propose ideas to Ursula von der Leyen, and all Commissioners will lead annual dialogues with the new generation to hear their concerns and receive feedback.

We want to congratulate Ursula von der Leyen for her reelection as President of the European Commission. 👏 We're delighted that cutting red tape, making investments faster, easier in European companies is a top priority. This will require courage and to face the truth: some processes and their stakeholders are less legitimate in the digital world, and priority must be given to 🇪🇺 Europe's growth versus special interests. We're delighted to see the creation of Vice-President of Simplification position and let us share one of our favorite statements by Ursula von der Leyen, as her roadmap: "I want Europe to switch gear. And this starts with making business easier and faster. We need to deepen our Single Market across the board. We need less reporting, less bureaucracy, and more trust, better enforcement and faster permitting. And I will ensure that we are accountable for this. Because only what gets measured gets done. Therefore, I will task each Commissioner to deep dive in their portfolio, and to deliver concretely on burden reduction. And I will appoint a Vice-President to coordinate this work and to report on progress to this House once a year. I will also introduce a revamped SME and competitiveness check as part of our Better Regulation toolbox. We all know there is no Europe without SMEs. They are the heart of our economy. Therefore, let us get rid of the burdensome micromanagement, and give them more trust and better incentives."

How will this appointment affect the political risk in the Eurozone, i.e., "the risk faced by investors, corporations, and governments that political decisions, events, or conditions will significantly affect the profitability of a business actor or the expected value of a given economic action"? 🇪🇺 5 more years for Ursula Von der Leyen as President of the European Commission, as she manages to get the support of the European Parliament. When I arrived to Europe in 2019, her first Presidency had just started. Then COVID-19 came and the Team Europe response, Next Generation, Global Gateway and many more initiatives. Now the work begins/continues. #europe #europeanunion
