The EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) has extended the mandate of Director Christian Pilgaard Zinglersen for another five years. A key challenge facing Europe, and a promise of the European Commission under its new political mandate, is to enhance EU competitiveness while reducing energy bills for companies and households, he said.

Energy transition is not only about adapting and decarbonising our energy systems but also about adapting the way organisations and bodies tasked with delivering the scale of change approach the challenge. The ability for organisations to look outside their traditional methods and approaches to accelerate change will transform performance, but it can only be done together!
After a hiatus in UK energy policymaking due to the general election period and parliamentary recess, there is currently new momentum from the Government. However, new policies will only translate into tangible progress if backed by clear, actionable, reliable delivery plans. Our UK Head of Energy and Natural Resources, Alan Sinclair, explores what is needed from the UK energy industry to turn investors’ positive intentions into a reality. Accelerating the decarbonisation of our power systems is fundamental to achieving our goals for sustainable development. Transitioning away from centuries of burning fossils is a huge task - the range and scale of projects we need can feel daunting but a structured approach can really build confidence across the stakeholder landscape 1. Clarity - being really clear about what we know we need, where the technology is mature and ready to go (grid, renewables, batteries, electrification). Accelerating delivery plans for new infrastructure focused on the shared outcomes we want 2. Authentic - being straight about where knowledge and markets are still emerging and what stakeholders can do to address gaps in understanding 3. Tackling barriers to investment help drive forward the commercialisation and readiness for new technologies to integrate as a holistic system 4. Learning - taking positive action to improve our knowledge and collaborate across boundaries. With so much innovation and development underway we'll need to take an iterative approach. A perfect technological solution to the transition will not exist - by communicating openly we can build confidence in the journey ahead - exciting times indeed

When considering confidence in deliverability, it is likely to be very challenging for several reasons, such as the exceptional scale and pace of change needed to deliver new infrastructure. This change in itself will be a mammoth task. The delivery of the unprecedented scale and pace of change needed requires collaboration and actions by all stakeholders, including the industry and customers. We're grateful to see The Australian Financial Review speak to Enosi's Steve Hoy about the government's proposed rules on #cleanhydrogen and how they could rightly be considered "catastrophic" for Australia's clean energy export ambitions and our globe's urgent need for carbon-free energy. Here's an excerpt: "The federal government’s proposed criteria for access to $6.7 billion in subsidies has appalled those who argue that Australian standards must match strict criteria in the European Union and the rules planned in the United States. Steve Hoy, chief executive of power tracing technology group Enosi Energy, said the rules would “essentially allow a significant level of greenwash into the hydrogen industry”. Mr Hoy said the proposed criteria “would put billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money into a not-particularly green product that may not meet international standards in any case”.
