I have contributed to a new UN Sustainable Development Group Report looking at #investment pathways for the delivery of #SDGs. It discusses six transformative entry points that can have catalytic and multiplier effects across the SDGs. This includes (1) #food systems; (2) #energy access and affordability; (3) #digital connectivity; (4) #education; (5) jobs and #socialprotection; and (6) #climatechange, #biodiversity loss and #pollution. We argue: 1️⃣ The #SDGs are deeply intertwined 2️⃣ Hence #integreted policy approaches are needed This requires: 3️⃣ Strengthening of #governance mechanisms through reformed policies and regulatory frameworks and enhanced public sector capabilities. 4️⃣ Transformation of #finance which will require a combination of #public and #private funds. 🌎 Implementing the SDGs – regional perspectives The process leading to the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been negatively influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The health crisis as a whole, and its substantial socio-economic impacts in particular, have led to many setbacks. These vary from the emerging of competing priorities, to restrictions in the availability of financial resources needed to implement the SDGs. The extent of this problem may be better understood as it remains open whether the SDGs may be reached by 2030 at all. The Sustainable Development Report (formerly the SDG Index & Dashboards) is a global assessment of countries' progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The SDR 2024 warns that on average, only 16 percent of the SDG targets are on track to be met globally by 2030, with the remaining 84 percent showing limited progress or a reversal of progress. Remember that group project where some people did all the work and others...well, didn't? That's basically the story of global cooperation on the SDGs. The report even created a ranking system, and let's just say some countries are the life of the collaboration party (looking at you, Barbados!), while others are more like the grumpy teenager who refuses to come downstairs for family game night (ahem, United States). Spoiler alert: global problems require global cooperation, and the UN is the only game in town for that. Moreover, achieving these goals requires serious cash, and let's face it, the current global financial system is about as efficient as a sloth on a sugar rush. Developing countries need access to affordable long-term funding to invest in a sustainable future, but the global financial architecture needs a major overhaul before that can happen. Think new institutions, global taxes, and a total shift in priorities – like finally investing in quality education for everyone (because, let's be honest, that's a pretty good return on investment). Overall, herding the world towards the SDGs by 2030 feels like wrangling a room full of toddlers with unlimited ice cream – everyone's sticky, progress is messy, and achieving global unity is about as likely as convincing them to share their toys (geopolitical tensions much?).
