✈ Prepreg Composites - improving production rate & accuracy 🚀 Anyone in the composites industry knows that preforming with prepreg can be a tedious and time-consuming process. The challenge lies in stacking material quickly whilst managing the removal of the protective backing foil. Here are three effective strategies: ➡ Kiss cut at the cutter side ➡ Using naked prepreg with a non-stick cutter-belt material ➡ Leveraging advanced robotics to remove the backer before layup The ideal approach combines these methods. A kiss-cut or naked prepreg allows an Automated Ply Placement (APP) system to remove the composite ply from the cutter belt efficiently. After picking, the ply can be inspected and placed into the laminate. For optimal nesting, leaving backer on a single ply per preform helps the process run smoothly through the use of a buffer. When the ply is needed, innovative technology can remove the backer, inspect the ply, and place it onto the laminate seamlessly. Over the next few weeks, we want to give you an insight into the fascinating world of automated particle foam molding. In a current project, we are realising a 100% complete solution for the efficient production of EPP parts. We will start with our star: the ABB 6-axis robot with a load capacity of 550 kg and a total weight of almost 4.5 to. The challenge: placing different inserts precisely in the mold and then preparing and handling the finished molded parts for further downstream process steps. With the help of the individually adaptable gripper and the effective range of approx. 4.5 metres, the robot is not only a master at inserting inserts into our machine, but can also remove the finished EPP components with ease. The big advantage: once programmed by our experts, the robot carries out its tasks to the tenth of a millimetre without losing precision.
