More than 25 years ago, I witnessed the incredible power of a story.
I had just founded the first pan India integrated marketing company and Parle products was one of our clients .
I was called by Pravin Kulkarni the then head of marketing at Parle and he shared the challenge he faced.
Parle G was struggling to break into the Tamil Nadu market, where Britannia Milk Bikis reigned supreme. The odds were against Parle G, but we believed in the magic of a Story and Shaktiman, the superhero every child adored.
We decided to bring the Indian superhero Shaktiman, played by Mukesh Khanna, to Chennai, inviting kids to meet their hero in exchange for two empty Parle G wrappers.
What happened next was beyond our wildest dreams. By the end of the day, over a lakh children and their parents flooded the grounds, all for a chance to connect with Shaktiman.
The energy, the excitement, the joy in their eyes—it was pure magic. That day; we created a memory, a story that would live on in the hearts of those children.
And the impact? Parle G sales soared from 50 tons to over 2,000 tons a month..
This was an age with no internet—imagine the buzz a powerful story can create in today’s digital times.
When you tell a story, you touch hearts, you leave a lasting impression. That day, We didn’t just market a product; we created a moment that people would never forget.
And that’s exactly what a powerful brand story can do !
Here are my quick takeaways from the Shaktiman campaign:
✔ Know your target audience
✔ Align your brand story with your brand values
✔ Take your audience on a journey from where they are to a better place
✔ Make your audience part of the brand story
Don’t sell, tell a story!
