How ethical is your wine? 🍷 #DomaineBousquet was featured alongside other top organic and sustainable wineries from around the world in The Ethical Issue by The Drinks Business. In the organic wine feature, our co-founder & CEO Anne Bousquet made the case for certification when it comes to wineries delivering on their ethical organic promises. “Talking of adopting organic practices while not obtaining certification is like dating someone but not committing to marriage,” she says. "Effectively, this gives wineries a loophole so they can pick and choose when to be organic. It doesn't work like that. It was a pleasure to host the "BASIS Vinschgau Venosta Campo" event in our headquarters. The event was titled "Different is Good - Generation Change and Product Differentiation" and it provided an insightful platform to discuss these crucial themes. Daniela Niederstätter opened the event with a compelling speech on the topic of generational handover, sharing her personal experiences and insights. The key takeaways from her speech were: - External Coaching: A successful generation handover often benefits from the guidance of an external coach or expert. - Time, Trust, and Respect: The process requires considerable time, mutual trust between both generations and the team, and respect from all parties involved. - Growth Opportunity: A generational handover presents an opportunity for both the company and the new generation to grow and innovate. Insights from Florian and Simone Rizzi Our CEOs, Simone Rizzi & Florian Rizzi, shared their experiences of taking over the Rizzi Group Srl from their father and founder, Walter Rizzi. Walter founded the company with the vision of offering a variety of products to the same clients, starting with fruit and vegetables from Italy and gradually expanding to include pasta, tomato sauces, olive oil, and other Mediterranean products. Florian and Simone, along with their cousin Ivan, have continued to build on this foundation by establishing the company on four key pillars: - Fruit: Apples, pears, kiwi, cherries, citrus, stone fruits, and vegetables from Italy. - Food: Pasta, rice, olive oil, vinegars, and various Mediterranean specialties. - Fresh: Salads for the cutting industry. - Development: New product development, marketing, and business development for the other business units. The global wine glut is a red wine issue. As consumers shift to lighter wines like white and rosé, red wine demand is in decline, leaving regions like Bordeaux dealing with oversupply. In response, the French government allocated €200 million to help farmers uproot vineyards or convert wine into ethanol, with Bordeaux receiving funding to remove 9.5k hectares. However, the program was overwhelmed: farmers applied to offload far more wine than the subsidies could cover, forcing them to sell only half the intended volume. Despite these measures, oversupply persists, with France overtaking Italy as the world’s largest wine producer in 2023. Bordeaux growers even joined national protests, securing an additional €150 million to help transition to alternative crops. Earlier this year I was privileged to have wine expert Tim Ellison on our Coutts Need to Know podcast. We talked at some length about the change in consumer trends in the ‘wine economy’. Having reflected on that excellent conversation, I can’t help but see the parallel challenges faced by Japan’s saké industry, which has also struggled with changing tastes and falling domestic demand. Like saké, red wine must find ways to evolve - whether through innovation, or targeting new markets.
