A fantastic, positive, engaging discussion today with the Theatre sector, as CIISA CEO Jen Smith and COO Andrew Medlock spoke at the SOLT/UK Theatre conference about our aim to support the sector - and the Creative Industries as a whole - to embed and uphold safe and inclusive workplaces. Its great to see City of Launceston secure $12.7 million in Federal Government funding for the Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre Redevelopment Project. PACTcon starts tomorrow in Montreal. Meanwhile the open letter led by Labour in the Arts has gained over 400 signatures from arts workers across Turtle Island. Visit LIA Instagram below to read the non-response from Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT).  There is a giant gulf between priorities of the artists and workers in our sector versus its leaders. While PACT may not want to do any of the things requested, their response is wholly tepid and uncreative, doing nothing to lessen the divide. Why not, at a minimum, invite LIA for a facilitated conversation?  Instead the conference will carry on, business as usual, while the world does not. If you are attending this year's conference, I am imploring you to keep this letter in the front of your mind whether you agree with it or not. Attend the one session that hints at this letter, being about "divisive issues," and speak up.  We valorize our art form as being subversive and yet the majority of it couldn't be less so. I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Stuart and Normal Leslie Churchill Fellowship (2023) Winston Churchill Trust (Australia), which allowed me to embark on an incredible research trip earlier this year across Chile, the United States, and the United Kingdom. My research focused on how to create extraordinary professional ‘public theatre’ with, for and by community. During my travels, I had the privilege of working with and learning from leading theatre companies, particularly examining large-scale public theatre initiatives such as the Public Theatre's Public Works Program in New York and the National Theatre's Public Acts in London. Additionally, my research explores the significant impact of smaller theatre company initiatives like Woolly Mammoth in Washington and Common Wealth in the UK - who create exceptional theatre works, deeply rooted in community engagement. The report I have written advocates for the expansion of community-engaged theatre within professional spaces in Australia, drawing on successful international models. It highlights the profound cultural and social benefits that such practices can bring, and offers strategic insights into how these successes can be adapted to different cultural contexts within our own country. The findings emphasize the transformative power of theatre as a catalyst for societal engagement and sectoral evolution. It also speaks to a proposed model of working which I believe holds great potential for Australia, blending the strengths of both large and small-scale endeavours. I am deeply committed to opening up a dialogue on how we can break down structural and financial barriers to make the performing arts more accessible, create improved pathways for artistic creation, and support theatre companies in diversifying and becoming more inclusive. Going to the theatre with my colleagues last week was incredible. During the performance, we had the opportunity to observe how the actors skillfully conveyed emotions, articulated their lines, and engaged with the audience. It was fascinating to see their stage presence and how they captured everyone's attention. One thing that really stood out to me was how theater performances are live events, which means unexpected situations can arise. Just like in our #ITprojects, where we often encounter unforeseen challenges, the actors in the theater had to adapt and handle these situations with grace and professionalism. Moreover, the #attentiontodetail in theater productions is simply remarkable. Every aspect, from the set design to the costumes, is meticulously crafted to create a seamless and immersive experience for the audience. It reminded me of the importance of paying attention to even the smallest details in our own projects to deliver a high-quality end result. Theater production truly showcases the power of #collaboration. It requires an extensive network of professionals, including actors, directors, set designers, costume designers, and more, working together to bring a production to life.
