Nexus Analytics & Research is thrilled to learn that Barbican Centre has received funding for the first phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme. Working with our friends at MARK Placemaking we prepared the demographic and socio-economic baseline to understand the food & beverage appeal of the cultural icon. This helped underpin the business case and place-making efforts of the excellent Barbican Renewal Team. Put simply, we helped with defining who visits, why they visit, and how can we further broaden appeal…. A real feel-good project! Mid and East Antrim Borough Council hold celebratory event following the success of £3.58m investment project in Carrickfergus An event to celebrate the success of a multi-million pound investment in the historic fabric of #Carrickfergus town centre took place recently in the Dobbins Inn Hotel. The £3,583,276 Carrickfergus Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) supported the restoration of 10 buildings in the town’s conservation area and was made possible thanks to investment totalling £1,788,700 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund which was match funded by Council with funding of £654,576 plus a contribution from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive of £140,000. The programme also levered in private investment of over £1million to support the regeneration of the town centre - addressing dereliction and supporting the creation of 12 new apartments to support town centre living. Launched in October 2016, the buildings have since been restored to the highest conservation standards, supporting the development of traditional building skills and crafts. This included the repair of roofs using traditional Welsh slate, the use of iron rainwater goods replacing plastic and the retention - where possible - of historic internal features such as fireplaces, doors and staircases. The project also supported a complementary education and skills development programme, engaging with over 4,000 people, supporting events in schools, colleges and to the local community. The programme was instrumental in attracting the £42million region City deal programme, focusing on the heritage led regeneration of Carrickfergus and development of heritage tourism in the town. The launch of the Fund for International Cooperative Development is indeed a timely initiative to strengthen the coop movement globally. It is a big step towards strengthening the Principle of 'Cooperation.Among Cooperatives'. Strengthening coops as peace-building institutions in areas of conflict has become very important at a time when the coops have the power to illuminate the world. Multiple ways have also to be visualized to strengthen their resilience and sustainability so that peaceful communities emerge. Innovative implementable action-points must then follow. Hopefully, the coops globally will join hands together to strengthen this Fund so that it can act as a catalyst for strengthening the movement. More such initiatives are needed to strengthen the global voice of coops.As we enter the International Year of Coops, this development has no doubt infused a new spirit in the growth and development of coops. #coop#peace #sustainability# cooperation

The Metro Atlanta Chamber put revitalizing downtown, improving public safety and ending homelessness in the city’s core at the top of its agenda in 2025 as downtown sees not only a historic wave of investment but also megawatt events that will shine international spotlights on Georgia’s capital city. The call to support revitalizing downtown into a vibrant, 24-hour community with ample housing comes as Atlanta will play host to the college football national championship in January, World Cup matches in 2026 and several other marquee events in the next five years. The chamber held its 165th annual meeting Thursday at the Georgia Freight Depot, the oldest building in downtown, where the region’s business leaders gathered to discuss key priorities within this plan, which included addressing the city’s unsheltered population and boosting the housing supply. Last Friday was a chance to present with RTPI colleagues from Norway and a pioneering community leader from Morvern in Scotland about 'Meeting Rural Housing Challenges in Norway and Scotland' for World Town Planning Day. I was able to: 1. do a (very) short intro to the Scottish planning and political system; 2. highlight the rural housing crisis in Scotland and the need for innovation; 3. showcase (with Sam Firth from Morvern) an innovative response to community-owned delivery of 21st century crofting; 4. explore some of the planning issues and obstacles that are still being faced despite NPF4s support for crofting and woodland crofting (and how to address these)...and advocate for support of such innovative community-led initiatives; 5. stress that we need to consider innovation in regulation not just innovation in delivery; 6. uncover that in Norway for 50 years a 'duty of occupation' legal mechanism has existed covering rural homes, allowing municipalities to ensure rural houses are retained as primary dwellings if required. This is rooted in a policy where second homes and primary homes are assigned different use classes (unlike in Scotland); 7. explain that in Scotland similar 'duty of occupation' controls do exist in the 1886 Crofting Act for this tenure type of rural housing... and as such controls are already fully supported by NPF4 and enshrined in our planning system; 8. and finally argue that in Scotland - where a Chief Planner letter (2011) strongly discourages the use of occupancy conditions - we nevertheless need to revisit this and also explore the idea of implementing use classes differentiating between second and primary homes. This to empower our local authorities to be able to prevent loss of primary dwelling stock to second home usage when required in specific locations...ensuring the potential application of a 'duty of occupation' as primary dwelling for all tenure types of rural homes, not just crofts. I'm convinced we need innovation in regulation not just delivery to meet the rural housing crisis, and that we have a model in our own culture of crofting that could be unpacked to serve everyone looking to live locally in rural Scotland, whatever the tenure. 📣 Our 2022/23 impact report is now live! Over this past year, High Trees has worked with more than 1700 individuals. We’re thrilled to share their journeys and successes in this year's impact report. From empowering individuals to fostering community connections, here are some of the highlights: 📈 Improving life conditions and prospects 635 adults were able to develop their skills by accessing at least one of our 80 adult education courses, with 154 of them gaining a new qualification. Through our employment and careers service, we also supported 115 individuals into employment. 🌱 Increasing wellbeing Both adults and young people reported improvements to their wellbeing. 77% of adults taking part in our adult education courses reported making new friends. For young people accessing our coaching support in schools, 88% said they felt more confident and independent following our coaching sessions. 🤝 More connected individuals and communities Our listening campaign on the Tulse Hill Estate led to 284 residents taking part and having their voices listened to. From this, 52 community leaders emerged and went on to receive mentoring support. Community leaders on the Tulse Hill Estate formed a dedicated resident’s group ‘Tulse Hill Estate Unites’. Supported by the High Trees Community Action team, the group has been campaigning to tackle structural damp and mould issues on the estate. 🌟 A stronger, more connected and collaborative VCS This year we worked in partnership with fifteen other Lambeth-based organisations, across five distinct partnerships. Through the Lambeth Community Hubs Network we published 19 free resources, leading to over 400 downloads. As part of the Building Young Brixton partnership, we supported a total of 3,493 young people across Lambeth. 🔉 Communities with a stronger voice and ability to influence change Through the Lambeth Peer Action Collective, 258 young people became engaged in social action projects. These activities followed on from the LPAC research on Understanding Young People’s Experiences of Violence in Lambeth. Residents from the Fields Estate were also supported in their engagement with local housing associations and in working towards setting up a TRA on the estate.
