In the world of insurance, we often believe that picking teams we work with is beyond our control. My journey, however, has taught me the profound impact of choosing the right team. In fact, it now became my motto and filter that I apply to the teams I partner with and its been nothing short of a breakthrough 🚀 Why you ask? Well, my simple answer is that it removes friction ⛸️, increases trust🤝, and multiples the impact 💯(as a bonus it’s a lot less frustrating and is energising). For me, the key criteria are: low ego, high velocity, execution grit, and deep curiosity, together priming teams for innovation, excellence, and outsized value generation. Chubb has been one of the teams that ✅ checked all these boxes and I really enjoy partnering with on a number of impactful projects. Primary focus has been on Asia, and on my recent trip to London I sat down for an insightful conversation about Europe insurance with EMEA leader Chris Eappariello and Alix-Anne Farque. At the same time a fascinating thought crossed my mind that Chubb actually managed a rare feat to somehow cultivate uniformly strong culture across countries and regions at a large scale 🙌 I have a hunch about how this magic cultural sauce is made and I remain curious about how Chubb scaled it so effectively. #dreamteam #culture #leadership

Picking the right team is crucial in any form of #startup. There is no reason why it should be different in #insurtech. The same applies to setting the right incentives. Especially in corporates, apples are often compared to oranges. You will not get hunters with the same remuneration as farmers. We all should know from sales/distribution - your salesforce gets compensated in a different way compared to project controlling.

This guy... what is he like? He says: "Who do you most admire and why? He is a business leader, Paul Armson, he has helped me move away from traditional Financial Service nonsense to Financial Planning (Putting your client first). He is a straight talking, no nonsense advisor to Financial Advisors, bit of a legend in our world. For any advisor that has never heard of Paul, you need to look at this guy and learn how he can help you." What has he been smoking? 😂 "Bit of a legend"😂 "Straight talking"🤣 "No nonsense"😂 You gotta love Derek. I do. Why? Because he's an action taker. Unlike most. It's so funny... advisers discover my stuff. They say it's great. But they never implement a damn thing. 🙄 Then others, like Derek, implement, implement, implement. The results for the action takers are amazing. Derek came on InspirationAfloat. In fact, he stayed one day extra. That night we got quite 'tiddly' and I shared with him even more ideas for working with small business owners. Particularly about sticking to your principles about your value... I told him (when it's applicable to do so) try "We only take on profitable clients. Is that OK with you?" His eyes lit up! "Run that past me again, Paul", in a drunken Irish 😂 So I did. This works with Business Owners, less so with teachers: "We do things differently to most advisers. In fact, we try to do the complete opposite. For example, most financial advisers try to be all things to all people and because of this have far too many clients they can't really afford to look after properly. We don't do that. We don't have many clients. In fact, we don't want many clients, because what we do for clients is very, very special. Because of this, we only take on profitable clients. Is that OK with you?" Clients always say YES! Of course it is! (Unless they're a teacher! 😂) If the business owner questions this or says "No, it's not OK with me!" Simply say "You're in business for yourself. Tell me, which of your clients do you give the most attention to?" The most profitable ones! Exactly. Mr Client, you wouldn't want to be an unprofitable client. In fact you can't be. We won't allow it. (NOTE: underlying message: Mr Client, you should want to be a very profitable client!) 😂 Could you be the next Derek? ************** Hi, I’m Paul. With one eye on what was happening on the other side of the Atlantic I attended the Island of Ireland AIRMIC conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Dublin keeping my other eye on what transpired to be an excellent cohort of speakers and contributors. Unfortunately, this time I was travelling solo as my "brother in arms" Feargal Bracken, BA Acc and Fin, Dip CILA, Dip LA, CIP had to attend a major fire loss. It was also a great opportunity to network and meet up with friends and colleagues of many years. I was particularly interested in the growth of Captive Insurers within Europe. The soft market prevailing in Ireland currently, will turn, as it always does, and Alternative Risk Transfer mechanisms will again become popular and necessary in some instances. Ongoing challenges in relation to global supply chain and weather-related catastrophe were identified as concerns possibly requiring those alternatives such as parametrics, a type of Insurance that was brought to my attention last year at another conference in Cork. We finished the day discussing those developments in the US in what seems to be quite the historic result. I do not consider myself to be a political animal and know very little about US politics. However, it was difficult over the last 6 months to miss the news (fake or otherwise) in relation to the presidential election coming from the US and indeed from local commentators. The bottom line is that most of those analysts seem to have got it wrong and I can't see how it can now be argued that over 72 million people got it wrong! Makes you wonder about "fake news" and exactly what you can and should trust and more importantly where you can get the correct facts to make decisions. We most certainly do live in interesting times.
