Omdia Shared the Report By 2030, machines will dominate global network traffic consumption. This bold prediction is supported by numerous indicators suggesting that machines involved in creating, downloading, and uploading videos will drive the next surge in data traffic. Some interesting reflections on their views: 1. Growth Rate: Data traffic is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20% from 2023 to 2030, stabilizing into a more "stable" pattern—yet still doubling every 3.6 years! 2. Changing Landscape: By 2030, machines or AI will generate 64% of network data traffic, marking a dramatic shift in the data mix. 3. Complex AI Applications: This isn’t just about low-data IoT devices tracking locations. We’re looking at upstream videos, image analysis, AI-generated entertainment, and XR B2B videos. 4. Direction Shift: Initially, data will primarily flow upstream (synthetic video/image, site to edge or cloud) for analysis. Later, significant data volumes will flow downstream (edge or cloud to site) for consumption. 5. Unpredictable Patterns: Our understanding of the traffic patterns generated by these AI applications is still developing. It’s probably too early to tell, but they appear to be increasingly unpredictable. 6. Lower latency: With many AI applications related to XR/immersive media or synthetic videos, there will be a heightened demand for quicker responses (lower latency) compared to today's apps. 7. Tiered Infrastructure: A tiered network infrastructure will become critical. Developing a strategy to handle processing across devices, edge, cloud, and the underlying Telco network is essential. 8. Changing Metrics: KPIs and SLAs for measuring app and network performance will undergo significant changes. While today's metrics focus on user throughput and consumer video for instance, we will need new paradigms to evaluate AI media/synthtetic video performance. Bonus - Processing Dilemma: A major question today is how much processing will occur on the device itself.
