Today’s reel tackles the much-debated ‘false step’ in reactive agility, which is often criticized by amateur coaches as an inefficient movement. What looks like a step backward when reacting to a forward stimulus is actually the fastest way for an athlete to get moving. The key here is that, although the feet move back, the athlete’s center of mass doesn’t—allowing the body to reach the ideal acceleration angle more quickly. The false step is really a misnomer. In reality, it’s more of a ‘plyometric step’ or ‘directional step,’ since it helps athletes load their muscles for an explosive forward movement by tapping into the stretch-shortening cycle. A false step may seem like a mistake, but research shows it’s the most efficient way to react in sports where rapid acceleration is critical, like volleyball. In part two of this series, I’ll go deeper into why track athletes don’t use the false step and how the split step fits into reactive agility. For now, I encourage coaches to rethink their critique of this technique—it’s one of the fastest ways to get players moving explosively. #ReactiveAgility #FalseStep #PlyoStep #SpeedTraining #AthleteDevelopment #VolleyballTraining #AgilityDrills #ExplosiveMovement #StrengthAndConditioning #rettasaurus #NoZombies

"We have always done it this way." But what if the way we have always done it was wrong? As a strength and conditioning coach, I hear these words often. Tradition has its place, but blindly following it can hinder progress. In the dynamic world of sports performance, stagnation is not an option. We must continuously evaluate our methods, challenge assumptions, and seek out innovation. So let's dare to question. Let's dare to experiment. Let's dare to evolve. By embracing change and staying open to new approaches, we can maximize our athletes' potential and lead them to greater success. #strengthandconditioning #Sportscience #athletedevelopment
