Good Morning LinkedIn The national living wage will increase from £10.42 to £11.44 an hour in April 2024. It will also apply to those aged 21 or 22, who currently earn the national minimum wage. April’s rise in the national living wage will constitute the largest in over a decade. The pay rise constitutes over 10% for those receiving it, which is far ahead of the current inflation rate of 4.6%. I will post more updates over the next few days as I prepare to have conversations with companies and how Central Employment can offer support at this crucial costing crossroad. #livingwage #centralemployment #recruitment

I am supportive of increasing wages to ensure they are appropriate for lower paid staff (I used to work at the university that did the initial research into London living wage and it made a clear argument to be an approved London living wage employer) and able for the individual to ‘live’ but there are many other consequences that don’t seem to be discussed widely. Areas such as pay differential, in facilities manangment, this can mean the increased pay a supervisor would get to a cleaner, the increased tax as thresholds are ‘frozen’ and finally the affordability gap, by this I mean if a company such as an educational establishment doesn’t get an increase in income, how will these increases be afforded, in the main this is a reduction in headcount. So the headline is lower paid staff get paid more but the harsh reality is there is less staff.

Are you ready for your Salary bill to INCREASE by 16.75%? The increase to National Minimum Wage each year is just another thing for us Business Owners to keep on our radar, BUT this year there are some BIG changes... From April 2024; National Living Wage applies to everyone aged 21 and over (this was previously only those aged 23+) and so the increases may well apply to many more of your staff than initially expected! When you are offering pay at or just over national minimum wage, you shouldn’t be expecting prospective applicants to have experience in the type of work that you’re advertising for or some kind of qualification that only barely indicates that they can do the job. If you are expecting people to accept a low wage or salary, train them to do the job, give them the opportunity, training and experience to do the job.

🆕Client Budget Update: National Minimum Wage🆕 The Government has confirmed the annual National Minimum Wage increases for 2025. These increases will come into effect from 1 April 2025 and are as follows: ⚫21 and over - will rise from £11.44 to £12.21 an hour ⚫18-20 - will rise from £8.60 to £10 an hour ⚫Apprentices - will rise from £6.40 to £7.55 an hour This is an increase of over 6% for those aged 21 and over, and the biggest increase for under 21s on record. There has been discussions of creating one single rate for adults, and given the increases for those under 21 this could be seen as a first step in that direction (though nothing has been confirmed on that specific point). Finally, the accommodation offset will also rise to £10.66 per day.

Hot Take Friday! Minimum Wage is not a living wage! Read that again, I don't mean what that sounds like. Minimum Wage is not a living wage! you are not supposed to be able to buy a house, support a family, and find success in the minimum wage. I hear this metric used all the time, there is no Zip Code in the US where a minimum wage worker can buy a starter home. you're not supposed to! Minimum wage is a stepping stone. Minimum wage is supposed to inspire you to move on. develop a skill, climb the ladder, anything but stay still. We need affordable housing and the minimum wage is supposed to help you get there. You wouldn't scale a mountain without the proper gear, so why try to buy a starter home with the incorrect income? Level up. Plan your moves accordingly. Execute the plan. #sfrealtor #sfrealestate #sanfranciscobayarea #bayarea #bayarearealestate #sanfranciscorealestate #realestate #sanfranciscobayarearealtor #sequoiarealestate

Great new overview of research on the impact of the minimum wage. Key takeaway: "We find that most studies to date suggest a fairly modest impact of minimum wages on jobs: the median OWE estimate of 72 studies published in academic journals is -0.13, which suggests that only around 13 percent of the potential earnings gains from minimum wage increases are offset due to associated job losses. Estimates published since 2010 tend to be closer to zero."
Introducing a comprehensive, continually updated database of estimates on minimum wage impact on jobs using the own-wage elasticity. An application of the database finds a small impact on jobs, from Arindrajit Dube and Ben Zipperer https://lnkd.in/eG_Qe2GP

How has the £11.44 minimum wage affected pay and differentials? The recent rise in National Living Wage saw the statutory minimum rate for workers aged 21 and over increase by 9.8% from £10.42 to £11.44. This rise means employers are tasked with deciding whether to adopt the statutory minimum or go higher in an effort to stay ahead of the competition and recruit staff, as well as deciding where to set the rate for supervisors and other staff just above this level. IDR’s latest survey explores how this uprating affects employers across the UK, as well as their use of the voluntary minimum wage. Participating in our survey will provide valuable insights into pay rates, differentials, and the primary factors influencing pay-setting decisions. Access our analysis by completing the short survey below.
