A lot of law firm owners are afraid of losing a key team member... they say, "I can't imagine what I would do if he/she leaves." 😱 Well, here's what you can do... 👉 Don't build your business model around the talent. As best as possible, find team members to fit the firm's business model and goals. 👉 Stay active in the job market. Keep job ads running, and make sure you have regular conversations at the courthouse (if you go there) with lawyers who may be interested in their next opportunity. 👉 Develop a contingency plan for the person's workload. Who will be responsible for what? What work is prioritized and what can wait? You may be surprised how much this puts you at ease. 👉 Start a relationship with a temp agency, just in case. 👉 Identify who you could refer excess cases out to (or co-counsel) if the legal workload is overwhelming. Better to focus on business development than get trapped in too much legal work. And enjoy collecting your referral checks! 👉 Remember, you have survived worse. You will survive this. ✅ It's never fun to lose a key person. Just control what you can control today and know there will be a lot you can control when you lose the employee. You'll be fine.

How do you describe your job to others? Sometimes I just say "Workplace investigator" because that's become such a big part of what I do. Over the years, I've found great satisfaction helping employers with investigations that involve a high degree of #human complexity or #emotional factors, like fear.
