So Long, SSF, and Hello, ISF In this episode of All Things Policy, Anushka Saxena (She/Her) is in conversation with Suyash Desai. The two discuss the recent reform announced in the Chinese military vis-a-vis disbanding of its Strategic Support Force (SSF), and the institution of a new Information Support Force (ISF). Suyash places this development in the larger context of reforms in the PLA, and its preparedness to fight "informatised" wars. Listen here: https://shorturl.at/DFPZ2

Big shout out to Peter Leahy and John Power for quoting me (from a RUSI post a while ago)! 😎 Interested they also used Heller's and Stofft's "America's First Battles 1776-1965 (1986), which I've just read (bought at the bi-annual Lifeline Booksale). A good edited book and worth a read. I was taken by Heller and Stofft's key shortcoming of peacetime US land forces fighting their first battle and not noted in Peter and John's article: "...all ten cases [examined] argue that realistic preparation and testing of senior commanders and their staffs for the complex, unnatural task of controlling large scale combat can hardly be overemphasized, especially because such emphasis must overcome the combined resistance of peacetime routine, bureaucratized priorities, and professional traditions." This is a shortcoming within the ability of peacetime military forces to address. Readiness is not just a matter for politicians as some may declare.

Cultural Narratives: The "clash of civilizations" thesis has been used to justify military actions and policies that align with the interests of defense contractors and military leaders. By framing conflicts in cultural terms, it becomes easier to rally public support for military interventions and maintain a focus on military solutions to international problems.

1yThis is a very well written and important essay on Chinese unconventional warfare using economic pressure against Hollywood and other media executives. It should be required reading in any Chinese cultural and/or warfare class. I assigned it this year in my China class and the response was amazing.
