📢 Some interesting and worrying news! 🙁 The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is voicing concerns about plant-based protein ingredients containing high levels of acrylamide, a potentially neurotoxic and carcinogenic chemical 🔬. EFSA is concerned that many plant-based protein ingredients may contain worrying levels of acrylamide released during processing, an increasing danger for consumers with high intakes, like vegetarians or vegans. SAFE is advocating for lowering the legal maximum levels of #acrylamide throughout the EU and is actively involved in a campaign to raise awareness with our member Chiara Manzi. Levels are set based on advice from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). More than 600 million people worldwide fall ill every year from eating contaminated food, and ensuring food safety is fundamental to food security, enabling better health and improved nutrition across the globe to tackle this alarming number. Shifts for more sustainable food production, to enhance food security and to reduce environmental footprints are seeing circular practices and policies adopted in agrifood systems – which raises an emerging concern about how these circular processes will impact food safety. Exploring this balancing act, Tonkin + Taylor’s Andrew Pearson, Senior Environmental Consultant, recently collaborated with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on a report exploring the evidence of risk to food safety in advancing circular policies in agrifood systems, to outline a way forward to overcome challenges and take advantage of the opportunities to protect and enhance food safety.
