Happy World Health Day! Together with the World Health Organization, celebrate World Health Day with us, as we celebrate this year’s theme ‘My health, my right’. This year’s theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination. We can help observe World Health Day by: 1. Raise awareness in your community about a current healthcare issue. 2. Read up on current health issues and concerns. 3. Show appreciation for our healthcare workers such as nurses and care givers. 4. Go for a check up and take appointments for your loved ones as well. “He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything” - Thomas Carlyle

Every year on April 7, Barstow Community Hospital joins the World Health Organization (WHO) in celebrating World Health Day. This global event serves a vital purpose: to raise awareness about a specific health issue impacting people worldwide. It's a day to focus on collective action, education, and promoting the importance of health for everyone. The theme for World Health Day 2024, "My health, my right," emphasizes a fundamental human right – access to quality healthcare. This year, the focus is on ensuring everyone, everywhere, has the opportunity to live a healthy life. The WHO highlights that over 4.5 billion people, exceeding half the world's population, lacked adequate access to essential health services in 2021. Barstow Community Hospital is focused on understanding social determinants of health in our area and advocating for health equity to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attain their highest level of health regardless of their socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or other factors. World Health Day is more than just a one-day event. It's a call to action for everyone to play a proactive role in improving global health. By actively participating, they can contribute to a healthier world, strengthen their commitment to the community, and establish themselves as leaders in patient care.

IT'S NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH WEEK! "Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health: Public health is more than just health care. It's the steps we take to make sure our neighborhoods and environment are free from pollution. It's making sure our food and water are safe to eat and drink. It's also the relationships we foster in our communities. We're all interconnected. When we all come together to support public health, all of us — individuals, families, communities and the public health field — can achieve the goals of public health."
It's National Public Health Week, April 1-7, 2024! This year's theme is “Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.” Our focus is not just the ways public health serves our communities — protecting our access to clean water and air, to nutritious and safe foods, to the right and ability to access essential health services — but the ways our communities flourish when they have their needs met. The American Public Health Association and National Public Health Week want everyone to know they can make their communities healthier, safer and stronger when we support and stay engaged with one another. As we adjust and adapt to new social norms, we’re focusing not just on what we can do as individuals, but what we can do as communities to protect, prioritize and influence the future of public health. Public health, public safety & infrastructure is a backbone of society. Listen to scientists. Trust scientists. Learn more about how science interacts with uncertainty in very structured ways to inform decisions that keep us safe. Currently reading The Poison Squad, about the history of US Food Safety research & the struggles passing legislation It's interesting to see how the conversations around "pure food" were going on over 125yrs ago, and how difficult it was to get tiny wins (e.g. no formaldehyde in milk!)
If you brushed your teeth this morning and didn’t get sick, you’re benefiting from public health infrastructure. Keep this in mind as you move through your day - driving around on paved roads in a car that has been crash tested, eating food that isn’t expired or contaminated with pathogens, meeting your friend at a coffee shop that isn’t a cloud of cancer-causing, asthma irritating tobacco smoke. That is public health. It’s not flashy, fancy, or super high-tech. In fact, if it’s working well, it’s barely noticeable. But it keeps you and your loved ones alive and thriving without so much as a thought. Happy National Public Health Week! Be sure to shoutout all of the heroes of public health in your life this week!

🌟 Embracing National Public Health Week: Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving! 🌟 As we embark on National Public Health Week, I'm inspired by this year's theme: "Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health!" It's a powerful reminder that public health is not just the responsibility of professionals—it's a collective effort that involves each and every one of us. In the face of unprecedented challenges, from the ongoing pandemic to environmental threats and health disparities, it's more important than ever to come together as a community to protect and promote health for all. This week, let's celebrate the incredible work of public health professionals who tirelessly strive to safeguard our well-being. Let's also recognize the vital role that each of us plays in supporting public health initiatives, whether it's getting vaccinated, practicing good hygiene, or advocating for equitable access to healthcare. By connecting and collaborating, we can create healthier, more resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Together, let's reaffirm our commitment to public health and work towards a brighter, healthier future for all 🌱 #NationalPublicHealthWeek #PublicHealth #ProtectingConnectingThriving #HealthForAll
