Chopin has nothing to do with the energy transition. The great pianist, known for the complexity of his compositions, was raised in Warsaw before moving to Paris to seek his artistic fortune. Famously, after his death, his heart was smuggled out of Paris (drenched in Cognac) and returned to his beloved hometown, the Polish capital. Today, it wasn't the technical challenge of Chopin's preludes or polonaises being discussed, but the challenge of the energy transition in Poland. Here's eight things we learned discussing with delegates at the #IDW2020 in wonderful Warsaw. 1️⃣ Grupa Azoty S.A.'s recent Polimery Police project is now one of the largest chemical investment projects in Europe, with the construction of PDH and PP plants producing 437ktpa. The project has been developed using state-of-the-art technology for production flexibility, low raw material consumption and minimal energy usage. 2️⃣ The conflict in Ukraine heightened Poland's energy security concerns, prompting actions to reduce reliance on Russian energy imports. The completion of the Baltic Pipe project in 2022 allows Poland to import up to 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually from Norway. 3️⃣ Poland is advancing biofuel production to reduce fossil fuel dependence, producing 1.5 million tons in 2022. ORLEN S.A.has its Trzebinia biodiesel plant and Jedlicze facility for waste-based biofuels and Bioagra operates the Goświnowice bioethanol plant. The government aims for a 14% renewable energy share in transport by 2030 through biofuel blending mandates. 4️⃣ Poland has emerged as a key player in Europe's battery industry. With companies like LG Energy Solution operating large manufacturing plants. Poland became the largest producer of lithium-ion batteries in Europe in 2023, supplying batteries for EVs and energy storage systems. 5️⃣ Poland is advancing its green fertiliser initiatives. Energy Group and Hynfra have plans to produce green hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol. All at an estimated cost is over €22 billion! 6️⃣ The Lotos refinery in Gdańsk is set to produce high-quality lubricating base oils by 2025, with the Hydrocracked Base Oil (HBO) facility now in the execution phase.  Rafineria Gdańska Sp. z o.o. is one of the most energy-efficient refineries in Europe from its recent championing of improvements. 7️⃣ Poland is advancing its green hydrogen infrastructure with several key projects. The Central Hydrogen Valley (CHV) has an ambitious plan to develop 250 MW of electrolysers and 2 GW of renewable energy by 2030, producing 54 ktpa of green hydrogen. 8️⃣ How do we hire people into this industry? Ralf Schairer had the take-away phrase of the morning. 'Hire for attitude, train for skills'. Especially important in this industry that is constantly evolving. National Green Hydrogen Roadshows continue in Kunene, Oshikoto and Ohangwena: Staff Reporter THE National Green Hydrogen Roadshow continued its tour across the country in the week of June 17. The team will be visiting Kunene, Oshikoto, and Ohangwena regions throughout the week. The roadshows, organized by the Government of the Republic of Namibia (GRN) and Hyphen Hydrogen Energy (Hyphen) have been crisscrossing the country to engage with stakeholders and communities, sharing information on the Hyphen project and the Socio-economic Development (SED) Framework. Ricardo |Gôagoseb Senior Manager of Communication & Stakeholder Relations of Hyphen Africa explained that the roadshow meetings are being led by Obeth Mbui Kandjoze, Director General of the National Planning Commission and Chairperson of the Green Hydrogen Council, and two of his team members. --- “Together with Hyphen’s Team, the roadshow will give an overview of the project, and offer stakeholders in the towns and regions an opportunity to ask questions. These sessions will give the people in the regions a real understanding of the opportunities the Hyphen project is bringing to Namibia. As has happened with previous stops on the National roadshow, GRN and Hyphen will engage with local and regional leaders. There will also be meetings with OMA’s, businesses, civil society, and the youth. The importance of these roadshows to engage the stakeholders cannot be underestimated. The presence of the Director General and the regional governors at these events emphasizes the importance. The first session on June 18 in Outjo, was well attended,” |Gôagoseb said. He added that the SED Framework, designed to ensure the project’s benefits are shared with the local community, will provide opportunities for local businesses, create jobs, and support local infrastructure development. “Hyphen and GRN are keen to understand more about what concerns and questions the stakeholders have by having an open and transparent conversation about the project, its timelines, and its goals. The Hyphen project is the first step in implementing GRN’s strategy to establish a large-scale Green Hydrogen industry in Namibia to support its economic growth. The total investment of US$10 billion – roughly the equivalent of Namibia’s annual GDP, will help transform Namibia. The project is estimated to create up to 15,000 new jobs during the construction phase and 3,000 permanent jobs during its operation, with a target for around 90% of these jobs to be filled by Namibians. Hyphen targets 30% local procurement for goods, services, and materials throughout the construction and operational phases,” |Gôagoseb said. Green hydrogen is one of the key solutions to achieve energy independence in Europe, and Spain is positioned as one of the most relevant countries due to our conditions. We talked about all this at the European Hydrogen Week in Brussels. I was able to attend from the Enagás Innovation and technology Area together with IGOR PAGAZAURTUNDUA to know closely the main advances in the different events planned (innovation forum and B2B forum) but also visiting the different exhibitors where all the agents of the H2 value chain collaborate to show their best results and bets for the future. Of course, we were also able to meet many of the partners with whom we collaborate in different projects of great relevance such as THOTH2, H2FlowTrace Project, PilgrHYm, SHIMMER, NHyRA, OPTHYCS, FrHyGe o GreenSkillsfor Hydrogen on behalf of our incredibles colleagues, who are involved leading corresponding Enagás tasks José A. Lana, Violeta Bescós Roy, Lorena Cuenca Fuentes, Jorge Modrego, Luis C. Gutiérrez Pérez o Ivan Montero Puñal among others.... Not by chance, 2 of our projects (OPTHYCS and SHIMMER) were finalists in the Hydrogen Week Awards as Best Success Story 2024 in the categories of “A blueprint to transport hydrogen via Europe's gas grid” and “A sustainable, circular European hydrogen economy”. We were also able to attend some very interesting sessions identified as Side events, Pitching sessions or the very interesting event promoted by WIGH (Women in Green Hydrogen), without forgetting to visit our amazing Clean Hydrogen Partnerships Officers, who are in charge of ensuring that the investment that Europe makes in Hydrogen is really used to get the best results. Undoubtedly one of the most relevant events of the year and a must for all those who participate in the new challenges to be promoted, it seems that in 2025 details of the event will be adjusted to return to the previous scheme of technical review of progress in the various projects and topics, it will undoubtedly be essential to follow closely the new proposal and we will continue to participate actively as now to return in a year and share in this incredible event and meeting again splendid people such as Alberto Abánades, Luis Sacristan Moraga, María Jaén Caparrós, Beatriz Nieto Calderón, Marcos López-Brea Baquero, Henar Olmedo Gómez and many others that are an essential part of the innovative hydrogen ecosystem that we promote from Enagas through Observatorio Tecnológico del Hidrógeno #EUH2Week2024 #GreenHydrogen

📣 Energy Observer completes her global Odyssey in Paris: an emblematic stopover during the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games Energy Observer, the emblematic laboratory vessel of the energy transition, will dock in the heart of Paris on the evening of July 28, 2024 for a stopover of almost three months, marking the end of a seven-year Odyssey around the world. A particularly powerful and symbolic moment, as this is where this unique and memorable journey began, when it was christened on July 7, 2017, in the presence of the Mayor of Paris and the French Minister for Ecological Transition. ☀ A journey during which Energy Observer equipped itself with solar panels made by Solbian, one of the official suppliers of Energy Observer. Solar energy is the primary source of energy for the laboratory vessel. This energy is converted into electricity, then stored in the battery system or in the form of hydrogen for long-term storage. Working with Energy Observer has been an opportunity to test photovoltaic solutions in a demanding environment, and to improve them so that they can benefit all kinds of applications on land and at sea. 🗓 From July 29 to September 8, Energy Observer will be berthed between the Pont de l'Alma and the Pont Alexandre III, Port de la Conférence, next to the “Compagnie des Bateaux Mouches” jetty. In the long term, wind power is expected to become a significant force in driving the sustainable development of the maritime industry.
