NORM Site Area Classifications One of the main Roles for RSO is organized the workplace which dealing with radioactive materials in generals and that process depends on the radioactivity released from the NORM activities in general and i think most of RSOs knows we have 3 types of areas :public, supervise and control area, even any HSE officers when issued any permit related to radiation activities in oil and gas ,knows that because the area classification must be mentioned in the PTW or with the attached Certificate and let me go through the public area because its very important and that area known also as non classified or non supervised areas. Public work areas are those areas in an operational setting that do not need any radiation related controls, except those that have been included in the design of the area engineering controls that you must mentioned it in your risk assessment before starting the project. Because the radiation-related classification of work areas is based on the results of a radiation risk assessment, an area that is found to be a non classified work area is characterised by low or very low radiation related risks, taking all relevant exposure pathways into account and according to regulations it used to be lower than 1 mSv/a. Persons who are active in that areas may be classified as 'non occupationally exposed persons' or you can call them public and please do not forget the others like birds and some kind of animals could reach your site and likely to affected by your radiation activities and all of these unfortunately do not require an annual dose assessment but make sure the potential exposures may change in time. It is therefore considered best practice that areas that are classified as non supervised are subjected to occasional dose assessments, to ensure that occupational exposures of persons active in such areas are at or below the public dose limit. This is to confirm that the area classification applies, and that annual exposure doses are limited to those from background radiation and to do that according my experience the best control measures are periodic monitoring for air contamination and radiation survey for the outer perimeter and control your activity related to NORM to make sure the contamination will not released outside your controlled area. Thanks #NORM #radiation #physics #nuclear #safety #contamination #radioactivity #exposure #risk #assessments

I would like to start by thanking all industry members that voted in the poll relating to this radiation safety awareness campaign. This is the first post of the campaign and majority voted for weekly posts. I will do my best to commit to this frequency. “Case 1: Improper disposal methods result in public exposure In 1989, a manufacturer received a 260 GBq (7 Ci) Ir-192 source that had been cut off from the source assembly by the user and stored in a radiographic source changer prior to disposal. A commonly practised technique was to allow the source to decay in the source changer before being transferred to a container for ultimate disposal. Inadvertently, the source was not transferred from the source changer to the disposal container prior to return of the source changer to the manufacturer; a radiation survey also failed to detect the presence of the source. Because the operating organization did not realize that the source was still in the source changer, it was not properly secured for transportation. The source changer containing the source was in the transportation cycle for 3 weeks before arriving at the manufacturer’s facility. Upon receipt it was discovered that there was a source in an unshielded position in the source changer. Although it is not known when the source became unshielded, it is estimated that members of the public could have received doses of up to 5 mSv, with an estimated highest exposure of 0.31 Sv to the truck drivers [3]. Initiating event The worker forgot to remove the source from the source changer before transportation. Contributory factors and prevention The regulatory authority had not established adequate requirements for the disposal, tracking and transport of radiographic sources. A system should be established that accounts for all radiographic sources, and that includes radiation surveys and physical checks.” I have reproduced this extract with permission by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from the following IAEA publication: INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY, Lessons Learned from Accidents in Industrial Radiography, Safety Report Series No.7, IAEA, Vienna (1998). https://lnkd.in/g6JZ9_Bh Photograph background: The image below was taken by me during a non-routine facility inspection at a major petrochemical plant, the winding mechanism ball-point had failed the OEM go no-go gauge test. At the time, this winding mechanism was not quarantined from service and easily accessible for use in industrial radiography by team members. The winding mechanism was immediately removed from service, clearly marked as defective and returned to the company headquarters for further actioning.
