I was just reading that, among other things, the folks in LA need socks, hand sanitizer/wipes, clothing, etc.. How about instead of giving away company-branded socks, T-shirts, and other swag at conferences, you send them down to LA? Here's a list of resources if you want to help in various ways. https://lnkd.in/gCj6McDp

On, Earth Day, theoretically the biggest holiday in terms of how "big" it is, I like to keep it small. I paddleboard a lot. It's one of the reasons I moved to Florida. In Pennsylvania, I generally paddled on the Susquehanna River, roughly 380 miles down from its beginning. 380 miles that have been mostly civilized for hundreds of years. It's difficult to go more than 100 yards or so without finding trash. There's actually an Instagram account from a guy who's been picking trash out of the water for the past several years. He's collected - literally - thousands of items. When possible, I'd pick up pieces, myself, but with so much trash and so much current, I found it impossible to make a dent. Before too long, some of what I collected would inevitably get blown off the board, despite my best efforts. In Florida, I live on a 28 mile river. It's a much smaller one in a state that's really only had measurable population for 100 years or so. On a two hour paddle, I might come across 4-6 pieces of trash and I try to pick every one of them up, from beer cans to lawn chairs. Why? Because when I leave the river will once again appear to be free of trash. At least for the day. My hope is that in doing so, my river in Florida never becomes too overwhelming to keep clean. That people will always pick up trash there because it appears wrong to not do so. So I choose a river that's "small." Likewise, I choose a tactic that's "small." There are wonderful nonprofits like the Suncoast Waterkeeper that are working to the protect my river and others in the courtroom. Organizations like the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast are doing their best to save these waters for future generations and I'm grateful for them and others like them. But someone needs to pick up the trash, and I'm happy to do it. #earthday #florida

Getting caught in fishing gear is the leading threat to whales, dolphins and other marine mammals. Every year around the world, more than 650,000 of these animals die caught in nets or snagged on fishing hooks — a crisis euphemistically called “bycatch.” Entanglement could lead to extinction for many severely imperiled species, including vaquita porpoises, Indian Ocean humpback dolphins, New Zealand sea lions, Māui dolphins, and North Atlantic right whales. To confront this massive threat, the Marine Mammal Protection Act requires the U.S. fishing industry to meet a set of standards for minimizing entanglement. This law also applies to foreign fisheries, which must meet the same standards to escape a U.S. ban on their seafood. Yet these critical standards — with so much potential to help marine mammals around the globe — have gone virtually ignored for decades. NOAA Fisheries has been dragging its feet on enforcing the law's requirements. In 2016 the agency set a deadline of 2021 for foreign fisheries to meet U.S. standards or face a ban. That deadline was extended to 2022 and then to 2023. Recently the agency again extended the deadline, through December 2025. Precious marine mammals and ocean ecosystems can't wait that long. Tell NOAA Fisheries it's past time to ban seafood imports that don't meet U.S. standards for marine mammal protection.

Let’s talk food insecurity 📢 “Research has shown time and time again that Nova Scotians are food insecure because they don’t have enough income, not because there isn’t enough food. One in every ten Nova Scotians can’t afford the cost of a basket of goods and services necessary for a basic standard of living. At the same time, Nova Scotia has one of the lowest income support rates in the country” (Feed NS, https://lnkd.in/ehq4Uumr). Feed NS is among many groups and individuals who know the solution to food insecurity depends on policies that increase the financial livelihood of low income Nova Scotians. They also know that in the efforts for systemic change, there is an urgent need for food access right now. This incredible team and their volunteers collect and distribute about three million kilograms of food annually to over 140 food banks, shelters, and meal programs across the province. The Faculty of Management had the opportunity to put our warehouse gloves on and contribute to the Feed NS efforts this week- packing and wrapping over 20 pallets of non-perishable food that will soon be on a truck and in the hands of our Nova Scotian community members in need. Though our team had a blast working alongside the Feed NS team, it served as an important reminder that, as a province, there is a long road ahead. There is a call to action. There are many ways to get involved in the fight to end food insecurity. Los Angeles is currently facing one of the most devastating wildfires in US history. Since last week, nearly 41,000 acres have burned. Over 205,000 residents have been evacuated, thousands of structures have been destroyed, and the fires are projected to be one of the costliest natural disasters in recent memory. For LA’s creative agencies—many of which call this city home—the fires are deeply personal. In response, they're stepping up to support their teams, adapt their operations and mobilize resources for the wider community. In my latest story for The Drum, I spoke with agencies about how they’re responding. Here’s a look at what they’re doing: 🟠 72andSunny – Established an Employee Assistance Fund and is working with a nonprofit to raise funds for relief efforts. 🟠 Mother LA – Opened its office space to anyone in the industry who needs a place to work, eat, or even do laundry. 🟠 Party Land – Offered flexible schedules, temporary shelter for displaced employees, and organized supply donations. 🟠 RPA – Launched a donation drive and volunteer sign-up sheet while encouraging remote work to ease commuting stress. 🟠 Concept Arts Inc. – Provided shelter at its office, mapped employees’ locations relative to the fires, and proactively checked in on those in impacted areas. 🟠 Giant Spoon – Launched a nationwide essentials drive and is donating to wildfire relief organizations like World Central Kitchen and the California Community Foundation. 🟠 Mischief @ No Fixed Address – Is actively supporting employees, clients, and partners at risk while closely monitoring production safety. 🟠 WPP – Created a donation-matching program and is offering displaced employees temporary accommodation, childcare services, and hardship assistance. 🟠 Adolescent – Partnered with Komodo Fire Prevention to spread awareness of home protection solutions for at-risk communities. Do we like Mondays? No. Does good news make a Monday better? Yes. Two weeks ago, the Cleanup Peterborough team and 18 volunteers went along the Little Lake Shoreline to clean out trash and cigarette butts. They filled five full trash bags, a bag of clean recycling (water bottles, pop cans) and nearly 5200 cigarette butts. Yikes. All that had the potential of ending up in the lake to degrade the quality of our water, and everyone downstream. That's great work! Sure, you may skeptically say that it's going to be the same mess in another two weeks. Fair. There are people who never learn how to clean up after themselves. But with this data, the City and groups who use the land can plan ahead with extra trash receptacles and maybe some of those snazzy tamper-proof cigarette butt tower things. Yes, you can still see Dude or Dudette throwing their butts on the ground while standing right beside it. But more people may be inclined to properly dispose of their trash. Volunteering helps bring fresh new eyes to any situation. They show that there is a definite need for focus on specific issues. It's why we do what we do: bring volunteers to the agencies who need them. Because we mean it when we say #VolunteersArePriceless.
