Who Could Resist Helping These Little Creatures? 🐧💔 From the playful meerkat standing guard to the waddling charm of African penguins, these small but mighty animals capture our hearts. Yet, they face enormous threats—some fighting for survival on the brink of extinction. 📉 African Penguins These beloved seabirds, are now Critically Endangered, with a shocking 97% population loss. Overfishing has left them starving, while pollution and habitat destruction continue to push them closer to disappearing forever. 🦴 Meerkats Their curious antics and tight-knit family bonds have made meerkats beloved worldwide, but they are increasingly being stolen from the wild to serve as illegal pets. The stress of captivity often leads to suffering and death, robbing them of the lives they were meant to live in the wild. 🚨Pangolin As the world’s most trafficked mammal, pangolins face unimaginable cruelty. Hunted for their scales and meat, they are at risk of disappearing entirely. These gentle creatures play a vital role in controlling insect populations, making their survival crucial for ecosystems. 🐾 Wild Dog Known for their intricate social structures and breathtaking hunts, African Wild Dogs are one of Africa’s most endangered carnivores. Habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict have decimated their numbers, but conservation efforts like relocations and metapopulation management give hope for their future. Education, protection, and conservation are their, and many other endangered animals and birds, only hope. Together, we’ve been able to help through wildlife relocations, education campaigns, and partnerships. CONSERVATION SPOTLIGHT: AFRICAN WILD DOG (PAINTED DOG) #FastFacts (source: African Wildlife Foundation) > Scientific name: Lycaon Pictus > Size: About 1 meter in length. > Weight: 18 to 36 kilograms. > Gestation: About 70 days. Lifespan: 10 to 12 years. Habitat: Dense forest to open plains. Predators: Humans and occasionally lions > Approximately 6 600 remain in the wild. > Endangered for over 20 > years. > Pack range can cover 1 448 kilometers. Throughout Africa, wild dogs have been shot and poisoned by farmers who often blame them when a leopard or hyena kills livestock. The principal threat to this species is habitat fragmentation, which increases human-wildlife conflict and localized, small population extinction due to epidemic disease. Larger populations have a higher chance of recovery from such outbreaks. As human populations expand, leading to agriculture, settlements, and roads, wild dogs are losing the spaces in which they were once able to roam freely. 🐾 Celebrating the wonders of our wild world on #WorldWildlifeDay! Let's stand together to protect and preserve the incredible biodiversity that makes our planet unique. 🌍🦋 Several species around the world urgently need intervention to prevent extinction. Here are a few examples: 1. Sumatran Orangutan: With habitat loss due to deforestation and poaching, the Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered. 2. Amur Leopard: The Amur leopard faces threats from habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict, making it one of the rarest big cats in the world. 3. Vaquita: The vaquita, a small porpoise endemic to the Gulf of California, is critically endangered due to bycatch in illegal fishing operations. 4. Javan Rhino: With only around 70 individuals remaining, the Javan rhino is critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. 5. Gorillas: Both the Eastern and Western gorilla species are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and diseases like Ebola. 6. Pangolins: All eight species of pangolins are threatened with extinction due to illegal trafficking for their scales and meat. These are just a few examples of wildlife in urgent need of intervention to prevent further decline and ensure their survival for future generations. #WorldWildlifeDay #greenpromiseinitiative

Have you ever wondered about the birds on Kauaʻi? And no, I’m not talking about all the colorful roosters and hens moving freely about the island, but rather, where did all the birds come from that we see here in the Hawaiian Islands today? How did they get here, and when? Which birds are native, or endemic, to Hawaiʻi, and how are they faring in numbers today? Are you curious about the threats to Hawaiʻi’s endemic bird populations and how you can join the conservation train? If so, this blog is for you. #kauai #niihau #lehuaisland

Yesterday the first-ever State of the World’s Migratory Species report was launched by Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) at #CMSCOP14. This landmark report shockingly reveals that while some #migratoryspecies listed under CMS are improving, nearly half (44 per cent) are showing population declines. We need collective and robust conservation action which the Wildlife Works Kasigau Corridor REDD+ Project has been a pioneer of for nearly two decades protecting over 200,000 hectares of Kenya's dryland forest. Migratory species including African wild dogs, Grevy's zebras, Cheetahs, Lions and African elephants are thriving in this vital wildlife corridor. 📽 One of the majestic African elephants 🐘 captured on a recent project visit. As the largest land mammal on the planet, these magnificent animals stand at three meters tall and weigh up to six tonnes. African elephants migrate through 37 countries within the African continent, consuming huge amounts of grasses, bark and fruit. Since the 1980s, the combined populations of river dolphin species have plummeted by 73%. With the Global Declaration for River Dolphins, 14 countries (six of them in Latin America) are expected to join forces to protect the six surviving species of this aquatic mammal that inhabit the world’s rivers and are under some category of threat. So far, nine of the governments involved have signed the declaration. The declaration comes at a critical moment for these animals. In September 2023, the death of more than 150 river dolphins in one of the most important lakes in Brazil raised international concern. #riverdolphins #conservation #speciesloss #globaldeclaration Marlien Nooren Fabio Olmos Sunarto https://lnkd.in/g47JzR45

Don't let this photo be the last way your children and future generations can see the Borneo bay cat. We can still save this Endangered species. The bay cat is an Endangered species only found on the island of Borneo; its dense forests make this cat species one of the most mysterious and elusive felids in the world. Panthera is just beginning to uncover its mysteries through our ten-year camera survey in Malaysian Borneo. However, we need to work quickly. Habitat fragmentation and the illegal wildlife trade pose serious threats for this already imperiled and enigmatic species — only a handful of images of it exist! Our data is helping us guide conservation strategies for this species before it's too late. When we protect Borneo bay cats, we protect Bornean forests, who need wild cat species to regulate nutrient cycles that power this exceptionally biodiverse, fragile and timeless ecosystem. Learn more about how you can help the bay cat before tomorrow's #EndangeredSpeciesDay: https://bit.ly/4aaUYbb Consider signing up for our monthly newsletter for the latest updates on Endangered wild cats, before it's too late: panthera.org/signup

"The assessment of migratory animals that are under protection from the treaty found that 22% of the 1,189 CMS-listed species are threatened with extinction and nearly half, 44%, are showing population declines, with many under unsustainable pressure from habitat loss and over exploitation." #naturebasedsolutions can help migratory species in various ways, including climate change adaptation, habitat restoration, and the provision of ecosystem services. The development and management of green or wildlife corridors is one example of how Nature-based Solutions can be employed to support the continuation of migratory animal species. https://lnkd.in/dG_-qu4p

#FaceofExtinction: In 1996, scientists identified a new dwarf toad in Tanzania, small enough to sit on a human thumbnail. Less than 10 years later, the Kihansi spray toad was gone. The combination of a new hydropower dam and outbreaks of the infectious disease chytridiomycosis wiped out the toad’s population. But sometimes such devastation can spark ingenuity. To address the habitat alteration, a team of conservationists developed an artificial “misting system” that mimics the Kihansi Falls spray. In 2012, captive-bred populations from zoos in the United States began living in Tanzania again. It's not yet clear if the re-introduced population is viable, but the misting system and other interventions may prevent this species from going extinct entirely. Interesting Facts about the Gentle Giants on our Planet Did you know? Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth, with African elephants found in 37 countries & Asian elephants in 13 countries. Elephants are incredible creatures known for their intelligence, complex social structures, and deep family bonds. 🌏 Globally, elephants are found in Africa and Asia, each continent hosting its species with unique traits. African elephants roam across sub-Saharan Africa, while Asian elephants are distributed in various countries, from India to Borneo. In Ghana, elephants are primarily found in protected areas like Mole National Park. Here, they play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, supporting other species by helping maintain the forest and savannah ecosystems. 🐘 Did you know? Elephants have a long gestation period of about 22 months, the longest of any land animal. In other words, females are pregnant for almost 2 years & give birth to 2-4 calves in their lifetime. This slow reproduction rate makes it difficult for elephant populations to bounce back from declines. 🌿 Elephants are herbivores with a massive appetite! Adults can consume up to 300-400 pounds of food daily, including grass, fruit, and bark, which helps them shape their habitats and impacts other species in their environment. They play a vital role in seed dispersal & forest regeneration. By protecting elephants, we're also protecting entire ecosystems. This gives them the name of keystone species in the ecosystem. #ElephantDiet Despite their grandeur, elephants are increasingly at risk due to poaching for ivory, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. We must act now to ensure these gentle giants don't fade into extinction. 🛡️ Join us in advocating for stronger wildlife protection laws, supporting anti-poaching efforts, and promoting elephant conservation programs. Every effort counts in saving these magnificent creatures and the beauty they bring to our world! Together, we can make a difference. Spread the word, support conservation, and keep the magic alive! 🐘💚 #ElephantLove #ActForElephants #ProtectElephants #WildlifeConservation #SayNOtoPoaching #WWF #IUCN #RainforestAlliance #GhanaWildlifeDivision
