🌾 Today, during our DSR field visit in a village in Ropar district, we encountered a farmer’s motor pump. Surprisingly, despite the village having 24-hour agricultural electricity, the ground water levels have dropped significantly due to high water consumption during the paddy transplanting season. As a result, the motor’s discharge was noticeably low, with water barely trickling out. Speaking with the farmer, we learned that this situation is common in the village during paddy planting season. Some farmers dig deeper borewells while others struggle with the limited water supply. Currently, they are relying on the hope of good rainfall to adequately water their paddy fields. We are proud to see this farmer taking the initiative to save water, soil, and the environment by adopting Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) practices. This issue demands our attention and collective action. Ever heard of 'double cropping' versus 'multicropping'? Double cropping involves growing two commodities in the same year consecutively, while multicropping entails growing them simultaneously. Recently, I had the opportunity to witness a research field where koi fish and rice were multicropped together. In this approach, both the fish and rice serve as revenue streams. Additionally, the fish play a crucial role in adding nitrogen to the soil, controlling weeds, and potentially managing harmful insects. It’s by no means a new concept but not one widely used in the U.S. It was a lot of fun to watch the harvest in Arkansas. #Agriculture #Sustainability #Rice
