How much do you know about Giving Circles? People have been coming together to give collectively for centuries and in the past 20 years Giving Circles around the world have given over £1billion. Giving Circles come in all shapes and sizes, involving people from a wide range of backgrounds. They are a long-established approach to collective giving where people come together to pool their resources so that their combined gifts can make a bigger difference. This beautifully illustrated website, from our friends at Philanthropy Together, simply explains how collective giving and people-powered philanthropy can transform communities and support proactive change – https://lnkd.in/dDHDX-v. It’s also worth watching the inspirational TED talk from Sara Lomelin, CEO of Philanthropy Together, showing how powerful it is to come together, build and belong to a community with shared values, learn about the issues in your local area and collectively decide which grass roots organisations would benefit most from the pooled donations – https://shorturl.at/QouKT People join a Giving Circle because they want to make a difference. Bath Women’s Fund is part of a growing, global movement of Giving Circles, so if you are looking for connection, collaboration, purpose and fun, then come and join us – our next event is on 9th December and we’ll be celebrating five years of giving! #FiveYearsOfGiving #BathWomensFund #Philanthropy #GivingCircles #JoinBathWomensFund #Community

Individual donors contribute 68% of the $427 billion philanthropy industry. Yet, fundraisers often shield donors from having hard conversations about the practices and theories underpinning modern philanthropy and how they perpetuate the injustices and inequities nonprofits aim to eliminate. To pivot away from toxic charity toward a shared vision for community wellbeing that is transformative instead of transactional, we must: ▶️ Center race, equity, and social justice. ▶️ Be thoughtful about which funders we take on. ▶️ Share resources and ideas to foster a network of support. ▶️ Value time invested as equally as money. Community-centric fundraising calls for fundraisers and donors to grapple with and address the root causes of inequity, including the destructive effects of capitalism and how we may be complicit in furthering them through our practices. It's an opportunity to refocus our fundraising strategies on a more holistic approach. Want to learn more about grounding your fundraising strategies in equity and social justice? In my extensive experience with successful campaigns, I've learned that philanthropy goes beyond money—it's about the belief and passion driving a community towards strength and unity. Beyond financial contributions, it's the shared commitment to positive change that defines true philanthropy, creating a lasting impact on the world around us. In our most recent blog, I share the various ways this can be accomplished aside from opening your wallet.
Philanthropy is about more than opening our wallets: Making an impact When we think about giving back to our community, it's essential to remember that philanthropy is about more than opening our wallets. It's about opening our hearts and minds to the needs of others and finding ways to make a real impact. None of us achieve success in a vacuum, there is often an entire network of organizations and people that in some way or another supported us in our journey. A must read for anyone in #philanthropy seeking to change it's assumptions and practices. Shoutout to Isabel Sousa for your insights! "Many of our peers are far along in examining their grantmaking philosophy and practice. Others are just beginning. Still, others are stuck, unsure of the risk they are willing to take to use their power to challenge the fields we have helped sustain. We hope that this report serves as a stepping stone for action. To our peers in #philanthropy, we urge you to question the assumptions rooted in privileges that have been passed down to us. We risk causing more harm by perpetuating an inequitable system than by attempting to change it." Link to download the report: https://lnkd.in/eZPJAYQE
Out now: The Hazen Foundation’s final report, “Reevaluating Practice: Reimagining Philanthropy,” is available on the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO)’ website! We are honored that GEO has offered to give it a home beyond the life of the Foundation. The report is a final offering from Hazen and our #nonprofit partners to #philanthropy. In it, grantees offer recommendations that will help our peers and partners to develop partnerships that advance a more effective and sustainable movement for social justice: “It helps to know what their constraints are—it humanizes them. When funders are open about their work, their approach to funding, and what they are up against, then we can come to a place of mutual understanding,” recommends Cathy Dang-Santa Anna, national co-director of Grassroots Asians Rising. The Foundation also shares some of the lessons we’ve learned throughout our five-year spend down, through a strategy defined by grantee input and collaboration. We know many of our peers in the field have long been working to implement strategies and practices that develop authentic relationships with nonprofit leaders and that center justice. We hope this report adds to your work and is a catalyst for pushing us all to go further in the pursuit of a just society. Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/g6C9V69Y #ReimaginingPhilanthropy

The Hazen Foundation has an important new report out with wisdom from social justice nonprofit leaders that goes beyond the standard recommendations for funders and gets into the real deal of how to make social justice grantmaking a reality. Some of my favorite nuggets from the report: -Program officers need to be transparent about internal challenges at their funding institutions and work with grantees to strategize about how to address those challenges. -Don't underestimate the scale of resources required to support movements! With recent high inflation, if you awarded a $50,000 grant in 2019 and maintained it at the same level for three years, that grant has gradually decreased the worth of the grant by about 20%! And funding to scale means supporting salaries and benefits at a level that can compete in our current challenging labor market. -Be wary of strategies and coalitions that are too funder-driven - collaborations usually only work if they come from the ground-up based on authentic relationship building. -PLUS: Nine steps for reimagining your application process with a social justice, grantee-oriented lens. As Hazen moves toward the end of its planned close-down, this report is a wonderful parting gift to the field. I was honored to be part of the research team for the report and to have one more chance to collaborate with the inimitable Lori Bezahler, Lyle Matthew Kan, and the wonderful team at Minerva Strategies!

Have you ever considered the pivotal role trust plays in the philanthropic pursuits of women? ✅ How women approach their giving, from choosing where to donate to deciding when and how much, is often influenced by the advice they receive from trusted sources. Whether it's guidance from family, friends, or experts, these insights heavily shape women's giving decisions. This highlights the importance of seeking proper guidance. While loved ones and colleagues may offer valuable input, not everyone possesses the expertise and experience needed to provide sound advice. Without reliable guidance, there's a risk that our efforts may not reach the right recipients, potentially squandering opportunities to support charities or causes in urgent need of financial assistance. Before making a decision, it's crucial to conduct thorough research and seek advice from experts who have your best interests at heart. If you believe our team could provide the guidance you need and you're ready to make a meaningful impact, schedule a call with us. 📞 Let's explore how we can work together to amplify your philanthropic efforts. https://lnkd.in/eP-mkBJJ #athenawealthandlegacysolutions #renewal #legacyplanning #philanthropy #willpower
