Day 3 of LinkedIn posts. I had scheduled something that I wrote yesterday, but it seems to have disappeared! Oh well! Instead of writing everything, I'm just going to do something simple and recommend a podcast. It's called The Great Simplification and I have found it to be an immensely valuable resource. The host, Nate Hagens, is such a gentle, intelligent, and skilled interviewer, who really helps his guests bring their ideas to life. The podcast is all about simplifying the complex issues we face and making sense of the world we're living in. I wrote yesterday about 'peak oil', which means a decline in our global production capacity of liquid fossil fuels. This presents us with a huge challenge, but a common response is: 'we'll just replace fossil fuels with hydrogen and renewables'. Well, unfortunately it's not that easy. Our society suffers from two ailments called 'energy blindness' and 'minerals blindness'. We don't realise how much energy and how many resources go into creating the things we buy, the buildings around us, and the infrastructure we rely on. We're already coming up against very real physical limits on the amount of metals we can extract to create renewable infrastructure. There simply isn't enough mining capacity or raw materials to create an energy system that produces the amount of energy we're using every day. The crazy stat: we'll have to go from 19 terrawatts of power to 5 terrawatts. That's a quarter of our energy supply and energy is everything! Dr Simon Michaux outlines this with so many brilliant examples and a lot of good humour in this episode of The Great Simplification: https://lnkd.in/eBTxmsfR Give it a listen and let me know what you think in the comments. And even if you don't listen to it, let me know what this sparks in you!

🎙️ ♻️ New Podcast: Transforming Mineral Recovery with Dr. Sebastian Leaper and Dr. Ahmed Abdelkarim from Watercycle Technologies In our latest podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Seb Leaper and Ahmed Abdelkarim, founders of Watercycle Technologies. They shared their inspiring journey from a University of Manchester spin-out to building a company that is transforming high-value resource recovery. 🚰 Watercycle Technologies’ groundbreaking mineral recovery systems extract high-purity products and clean water from sub-surface brines, industrial wastewater, and end-of-life batteries. Their modular technology reduces costs, carbon emissions, and waste while delivering fresh potable water as a by-product. 🔋 Key topics include: • How their innovative systems tackle water scarcity and wastewater challenges. • Unique processes to recycle batteries and to recover critical minerals like lithium. • The importance of strategic partnerships across the UK, Egypt, and beyond for scaling up operations. • Their advocacy for improved investment frameworks to drive UK tech growth. • A roadmap for full commercialisation by 2025 and 2026. 🧠 Listen to this insightful conversation as Seb and Ahmed share their journey, challenges, and vision for the future of sustainable technologies. Thanks again, Seb and Ahmed! This episode was hosted by Andre Shortell and Louis Barrowcliff https://lnkd.in/d745xFnz

Sharing is caring on a Monday in August 😎 I was alerted to this podcast by our excellent energy transitions team and I thought it would be the perfect way for you to start the week. Deep in thought, that is. Because this podcast hits the nail on the head in asking "What does it mean to be green?" and this is a question I wish more people would ask. After all - how do you get to your target if you don't know (or won't agree) on what the target is? Happy listening and happy Monday! #energy #energytransition S&P Global
