There's a known workforce gap in systems engineering and the CO-WY engine is prepared to bridge this gap. We recently received $3 million in overall funding as part of the Opportunity Now Colorado Workforce Development Grant Program. This capital allows us to address a critical workforce challenge by placing systems engineering interns and apprentices in startups around the state for the next two years. We’ve long been aware of the need for skilled systems engineers in the region. Without mechanical, electrical, and data engineering, innovative companies in the climate mitigation and resilience spaces are hamstrung by a simple lack of manpower. Fostering talent to address workforce issues across different disciplines creates a well of local resources to drive progress in fields like: -Earth Sensing -Soil Carbon Capture -Extreme Weather Preparedness -Wildfire Risk Management -And more With the Opportunity Now Award, CO-WY Engine can support wider company goals and directly benefit communities in Colorado by providing opportunities for people looking to pursue systems engineering as a career. We’re grateful to the State of Colorado for their support in helping us close the system engineering skills gap. Receiving the Opportunity Now Award is a major milestone and a critical investment in the community - one we plan to capitalize on at scale in Q3.

There is no growth that comes without learning. I also understand that there are many ways of passing knowledge and skills from one person to another. When I joined Davis & Shirtliff, I had scanty knowledge of pumps and most of it was theoretically correct but my mentors and especially the field technicians could confirm otherwise. I had read about the eye of the impeller and grasped some hydraulic formulas, from campus, that I believed helped me convince the interview panelists, not once but twice, to consider my candidature for in-depth training on pumps. The opportunity was granted. Little did I know that later on I could work with pump designers and manufacturers. The relationship has contributed to wider development of pumps by Pedrollo S.p.A. At Pedrollo Academy, one is equipped with hands-on skills, soft skills and empowered to acquire more knowledge about pumps while interacting with the final products in the field and making reference or consulting with the global team. Did you know that Davis & Shirtliff offers training on water and energy related solutions, free if charge, to clients and staff across our region?

Amy Harmon once said, "You loved Ferris wheels more than roller coasters because life shouldn’t be lived at full speed, but in anticipation and appreciation." 🎡The Ferris Wheel is considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats of the world. It was created in 1893 by George Ferris (a structural engineer 😉) and was supported by two steel towers of 140-feet each, the longest piece of forged steel ever at that time. First Wednesday in August is celebrated as the Professional Engineers Day. This was the brainchild of Tim Austin who is not only a licensed professional engineer himself, but also was president of the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) for 2015-2016.The first Professional Engineers Day was celebrated in 2016 when it was launched by the NSPE with the purpose of raising public awareness about the specific contributions of licensed professional engineers in the US. Since 1907, when the first professional engineer’s license was issued in Wyoming to Charles Bellamy, the engineers of the nation have continued to expand their commitment to the welfare of the public in a wide range of ways including health, safety, industry and more. As we celebrate Professional Engineers Day today, let’s take a moment to appreciate the everyday innovations that make our lives better—engineers are the unsung heroes behind it all. Here are a few fascinating examples of engineering excellence: 📍 The snowboard, a masterpiece of geometry, chemistry, and biomechanics, created by a brilliant engineer. 📍 Running shoes meticulously designed to enhance performance, comfort, and protection, with every detail considered to optimize foot safety. Today, let's honor and celebrate the engineers who innovate, problem-solve, and enrich our lives. If you know a professional engineer, reach out and let them know how much their work is valued! #ProfessionalEngineersDay #EngineeringExcellence #Innovation #ThankAnEngineer #EngineeringMarvels
