The burden of sickle cell goes beyond physical symptoms, affecting individuals emotionally and socially. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has one of the highest prevalence of #sicklecell disease in the world, with up to 2.6% of the population affected, and on World Sickle Cell Day, I am #PfizerProud of our efforts in developing innovative solutions to lessen the burden of this disease, and to improve the quality of life for those living with this condition.   Raising awareness about sickle cell disease is key to ensuring early diagnosis, access to quality care, and improved outcomes for patients. Urgent health warning after Britons catch 'severe' illness on foreign trips! ✈️ The Foreign Office has issued an urgent warning after a severe illness was detected in people returning to the UK from trips abroad. Three cases of meningococcal disease - a bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis and sepsis - have now been detected. The disease has a high mortality rate, and requires immediate medical intervention and antibiotics, warns the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). If you missed it, earlier this year I released a paper alongside Pazukhina, E. et al. (2024) which researched the event rates and incidence of Post-COVID-19 condition in hospitalised SARS-CoV-2 positive CYP in Moscow. Utilising the long COVID paediatric protocol and survey developed by the International Severe Acute Respiratory and Emerging Infection Consortium (ISARIC), we found that the Wuhan variant exhibited a propensity for inducing a broad spectrum of physical symptoms and emotional behavioural changes, while the Omicron variant resulted in fewer post-infection effects no different from common seasonal viral illnesses. A potentially fatal disease caused by a rare and aggressive strain of flesh-eating bacteria is spreading in Japan following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions. According to Japan Times, cases of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) reached 977 by June 2 this year, surpassing the previous record of 941 cases reported for all of last year, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, which has tracked the disease since 1999. Group A Streptococcus (GAS), typically causing “strep throat” in children, can sometimes lead to severe symptoms like limb pain, swelling, fever, low blood pressure, necrosis, breathing problems, organ failure, and death. People over 50 are more vulnerable to the disease. The number of cases skyrocketed over 20-fold higher in just the first two months of 2024. 📈 According to Bloomberg, China recorded a staggering 32,380 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in January and February alone, compared to just 1,421 cases during the same period in 2023. 😨This emphasizes the possibility of a highly contagious respiratory disease resurgence in China. 🌍But it's not just China facing this threat.
