🔏 Reliable generative AI: a key to industrial competitiveness 📈🏭 The Falling Walls Science Summit will take place in Berlin from November 7 to 9, 2024. This year, the focus will be on global challenges. The panel “Reliable Generative AI: A Key to Industrial Competitiveness” on November 9 will examine the transformative potential of generative AI. Experts from research, business and politics will discuss the development of reliable AI systems with a focus on sustainable economic growth, transparency and ethics. Our CEO Martina Schuster LL.M will provide deeper insights into appliedAI in the panel together with Mehdi Ali (Lead Scientist and Head of the Innovation Group on Foundation Model Research at the Lamarr Institute), Gosia Binczyk (EU Commission), Hans-Joerg Voegel (Head of Hardware Software Co-Design at the BMW Group (Head of Hardware Software Co-Design at the BMW Group.) and Ludwig Siegele (Senior Editor at The Economist), will lead the discussion. As part of the Network Institute at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) I'm co-organizing an interdisciplinary workshop on the digital society. This year's topic is societally engaged AI. From the call: "As AI reshapes our world, critical questions emerge about its role in addressing – or perpetuating – societal challenges. From algorithmic bias and environmental costs to the concentration of AI power in the hands of a few, we face urgent questions about how to develop AI systems that genuinely serve society’s needs. To tackle this, we need to reimagine AI development through a socially engaged lens: how can we create AI technologies that actively contribute to social justice, environmental sustainability, and democratic values? What does it mean for AI to be truly “societally engaged,” and how can we ensure it serves diverse communities and needs? To address these questions, researchers should bridge technical and social perspectives, combining rigorous technical expertise with deep understanding of societal implications." They've developed what they call an "AI Scientist"—a tool that can autonomously explore research avenues, create papers, and even review them. While we are getting used something new every now and then in the AI space, it raises some compelling questions about the future of research and innovation. Here are a few key takeaways that got my gears turning: 1. **Automation of Research** : The AI can brainstorm ideas, code experiments, analyze results, and produce papers—often at a cost of just $15 per paper! The impact of this could be profound. Could we soon have a multitude of AI researchers tackling some of the world's most pressing challenges? 2. **Democratizing Knowledge**: Imagine a world where researchers, regardless of resources, can produce research at a fraction of the cost. This could level the playing field for aspiring scientists and academic institutions across the globe. 3. **Human Collaboration vs. Replacement**: The creators insist that human researchers won't be replaced but will instead "move up the food chain." But this begs the question: How will roles evolve in a landscape increasingly populated by AI? 4. **Ethical Considerations**: As the famous quote goes "With great power comes great responsibility". How will we ensure the integrity of the research output? Can we avoid the inundation of journals with automated papers that may not hold scientific merit? In this fascinating intersection of AI and science, it’s clear we have much to learn—and much to discuss. The potential of AI to revolutionize the field of research is monumental, but so are the challenges it presents. As we venture deeper into this uncharted territory, I'm eager to hear your thoughts. #FARI2024 | Two inspiring #keynotes opened the discussion: “AI, a Public Good?” The conference kicked off with insightful talks from Mireille Hildebrandt, FBA and Theresa Zueger. ✨ Mireille Hildebrandt, FBA, Professor Emerita at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Radboud University, clarified the concepts of “public good” and what society can expect from AI. She advocated for a “slow science” and “slow AI” approach to ensure technology is robust, fair, and truly beneficial to everyone. If done well, slow development will actually speed up effective AI for the public good and make it less vulnerable to bugs, manipulation, and security failures: “Let’s take it slowly and be faster.” ✨ Theresa Zueger, of the Public Interest AI research group in Germany, then further explored the question by explaining why we need to improve the language we use around #AI and why it’s important to specifically define terms like “public interest.” Through real-life examples, Züger showed how collaboration is used in AI projects that benefit the #PublicGood. These two powerful speeches set the stage for engaging discussions throughout the day! We are excited to announce the launch of The Sôhkêpayin Guide, a blueprint for integrating Indigenous perspectives when working with Artificial Intelligence. This guide ensures that technology and data collection are inclusive and respectful of diverse worldviews. Over the past few years, we have collaborated with academics and artists from Japan, Canada, Australia, and Mexico, as well as institutions like the Ontario Science Centre and the Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park). Our goal is to address and counteract the biases that have long been associated with AI, establishing protocols that honour data and its sources. The implications of this research extend beyond AI, providing valuable insights for: - Service and product development - Government policy - Research frameworks - Urban design - Environmental restoration This guide sparks a broader conversation about developing future data use and collection methodologies.
