MEET OUR TEAM: Julian Scott Julian is a talented Estimator who joined Balmain & Co at the start of 2024. Based at head office in Victoria, Julian’s expertise and enthusiasm have quickly made him an invaluable member of our team. We asked Julian a couple of questions about himself and here’s what he had to say: Why did you choose a career in construction? "When assessing careers, I wanted a constant challenge in a fast-paced environment where you are always learning and improving. I found construction fits this perfectly, as every project has its own unique challenges and construction methodology. You are constantly exposed to new systems, methods, and challenges to overcome." What do you love about your job at Balmain & Co? "The scope and complexity of projects we look at—from high-end luxury apartments to heritage retention works—no two projects are the same. You are always on your toes and learning more about construction." What is the most valuable career advice you've received so far? "This makes me immediately think of two quotes. The first quote is, 'Every job seems easy until you're the one who has to do it.' The second quote is, 'Never be married to your ideas.' Always review and be open to changing your mind as you get new information." What do you like to do when you're not working? "I really enjoy walking and hanging out with my dog, exploring the city, and trying new restaurants!" Julian’s passion for construction and his proactive approach to overcoming challenges have made him a welcomed addition to our estimating team. HG Construction has appointed Greg Purkiss as its new Managing Director, marking the completion of its corporate restructure. Purkiss, who began his career with the Hitchin-based contractor in 2000 as a trainee quantity surveyor, previously served as Commercial Director. In his new role, he will collaborate with CEO Adam Quinn to oversee and manage all business operations across the UK. This appointment follows significant structural changes over the past year, including the establishment of a new operational board and the appointment of dedicated construction directors with regional responsibilities. Today we have put our meet the team spotlight on quantity surveyor, Kym Godward-Large. Hear from Kym on how she got into her career and her wants for the industry. 1. Why did you choose quantity surveying? I didn’t initially! It wasn’t until after doing my masters in Built Environment Studies at Nottingham Trent University that an agency contacted me about a quantity surveying job and said that I had almost all the experience needed to be a QS. They taught me that being a QS is about providing a fair, quality and skilled service and maintaining good relationships with subcontractors and clients. 2. Best thing about being a QS? Being involved closely in construction projects without having to work on site or get up very early! 3. Hardest thing about being a QS? I find procurement the trickiest task, to maintain a balance between the contractor’s budget, quality and the subcontractor’s requirements. 4. Favourite project worked on? My first one in my placement year. A timber frame, extra care facility in Leeds. 50 apartments for over 55s, 20 ensuite rooms for dementia sufferers along with communal spaces. 5. Proudest career moment? Achieving a profit on a £1m project that was £60k and two subcontractors down in the first six weeks. 6. Favourite building? I like Cathedrals, for their size and craftsmanship. The inside of the Scottish Parliament building with all the glulam beams is impressive too. 7. What advice would you give someone currently looking at career choices? Find out what you enjoy, e.g. problem solving, process creation, working indoors or outdoors, and find a job that matches those elements. 8. What would you change about the construction industry? A key area I would like to see improved is house building quality and automation. Too many companies have not made factory style house construction financially viable. This is key to improving the quality of new houses. The above also leads into another vital area the construction industry must improve on which is environmental standards. The building regulations need to increase standards for energy consumption and the like a lot quicker. Construction sites also need to drastically reduce waste. Large quantities of new materials go in skips, and while they are recycled, the aim should be to avoid them going in the skip in the first place. 9. If you were not a QS, what would you be? Our meet the team this month is Malcolm Hart. QS Malcolm has been with us close to four years and today we hear from him on how he got into this career, his favourite projects and what he’d like to change in the industry. 1. Why did you choose Quantity Surveying? Having been in the construction industry a short time in my early career, I quickly learnt at that time that construction had a poor reputation for late delivery of projects and overspend. The cost certainty that clients deserved was not evident. It became clear to me that the profession that could cement the artistic consultants, scientific consultants and contractors together, was the quantity surveyor. 2. Best thing about being a QS? Developing a trusting working relationship with clients, consultants and contractors, and working with intelligent professional colleagues offering support on all levels. Delivering projects to the satisfaction of both clients and contractors. 3. Hardest thing about being a QS? Breaking bad news. If a client has overspent or a contractor is expecting more than they were contractually entitled to, the issue needs to be addressed at the earliest possible opportunity. 4. Favourite project worked on? RAK Records recording studios, St. John's Wood, North London. 5. Proudest career moment? There are lots; projects, people, places. Too hard to choose! 6. Favourite building? Gloucester Services. Huge, laminated timber frame structures with green roofs. “The image for Gloucester Gateway was to build a building, that didn’t look like a building.” 7. What would you change about the construction industry? I would eliminate competitive tendering which is the root cause of most problems encountered. Comprehensive design with intelligent planning, negotiation with contractors, subcontractors and suppliers included in the pre-contract design stage would enable projects to be delivered quickly and cost effectively. Clients would be assured that they have value-for-money by established cost-planning and historic cost monitoring techniques. 8. If you were not a QS, what would you be? In the case of Walsh Construction v. Toronto Transit Commission et al., 2024 ONSC 2782, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice addressed critical issues in a complex construction delay claim:   ➡️Expert Evidence in Delay Claims: The Court emphasized the value of independent expert analysis in determining compensable delay. Here, Walsh's expert provided a thorough delay impact assessment, as compared to TTC's critique-only approach. ➡️ Subcontractor Flow-Through Claims: The Court ruled that Walsh could not recover on behalf of subcontractors after signing liquidating agreements that released it from liability. It stressed the procedural nature of flow-through claims and the importance of privity of contract.   This case underscores the need for robust expert evidence in construction delay claims and highlights the potential limitations of liquidating agreements in flow-through claims.
