💥 International competition to remodel blind walls: Project Wicker Wallscape, 2nd prize Blind walls, often seen as vertical wastelands, are a common feature in many European cities, yet they offer incredible creative potential. In this project, a thorough site analysis allowed us to extend the existing vegetated embankment onto the blind wall, transforming it into a living, landscaped façade. The use of wicker—a natural, lightweight, flexible, and rot-resistant material—lies at the core of this project.

Today, the 5th of June, is World Environment Day, which aims to raise awareness on the importance of protecting our natural treasures. In architecture and design, we are committed to environmentally responsible, future-proof solutions. We strive to minimise the ecological footprint of our projects through our innovative approach and environmentally conscious use of materials, among others. We believe architecture offers the opportunity to live in harmony with nature while creating modern and comfortable living spaces. We can give you examples too. In Etele Plaza, special attention has been given to the incorporation of timeless materials, the design of passive shading and thermal insulation systems, and the recycling of waste. In the case of the Kanizsa Arena, another one of our designs, the carbon footprint of the construction was much lower than other sports halls of similar size, at just 0.42 t/m2. Our aim is to create liveable, future-proof buildings with the least possible impact on the natural environment.

Rooftops that are not green and/or usable are a huge waste of amazing real estate and resources. Here’s one fantastic and creative approach to #rethinkingrooftops. What would you do with rooftops?
Can placing a park on top of a serpentine-shaped building, create a sense of community? Basecamp Lyngby is a socially interacting super structure that functions as a sustainable shared living community for 900 students, PhDs and senior citizens. The organic structure is inspired by the surrounding green area and a desire to bring people closer to the nature, and motivate them to interact with it and with one another. The organic volume is playfully wrapped around smaller courtyards, creating well defined intimate spaces for people to meet, read or simply enjoy life. The central round shaped building is the heart of the area. It visually reinforces the structure and interlinks the entire area by bringing together all the shared features such as the café, the gym, workshops, a cinema, and a library. ✍️ Lars Gitz Architects, Kragh Berglund Landscape Architecture and Urban Design

What are the start up AND maintenance costs involved in greening a rooftop like this? Question for planners, architects, landscape designers and urban greening enthusiasts. For example, are there waterproofing issues that need to be addressed on a regular basis? Other factors of wear and tear that need costing in? Seems to me that we can emphasise a lot of the health, social and environmental benefits of greening roofs - indeed it may be difficult to underestimate them. And I love the ones I’ve visited, mostly overseas eg in Tokyo. But I’d like to understand the cost-benefit in a comprehensive manner. So, what are the costs of a green roof?

This about how to link the community and architecture.
