As we move through the supplier transformation journey, let’s turn our attention to China—a market critical to the future of BEVs. By 2035, BEVs are projected to account for 82% of total vehicle sales in China, highlighting the country’s pivotal role in shaping the future of mobility. What lessons can global suppliers take from this? #EV #Automotive #FutureMobility #ChinaEV Rolf Kilian Florian Stegmueller Alex. Brenner Thomas Weber

“The penetration rate of NEVs crossed 48.2 per cent last week, and if it continues at this rate, I estimate that the penetration could cross 50 percent in the next three months,” Wang Chuanfu said in a recent speech at the China EV 100 Forum in Beijing. Around 9.5 million NEVs were sold in China in 2023 making up 31% of the world’s largest car market. Of these 6.7 million were fully electric BEVs and 2.8 million were PHEVs meaning BEVs make up around 70% of all NEVs. In December 1.13 million NEVs were sold in China making up 40% of the the total 2.79 million passenger cars sold. And on the other hand, Mr. Toyoda will claim that EVs will only have a 30% share. 🤦♂️ What do you think about it? Write me in the comments. Is the EV market really facing a crisis? According to several media articles, car OEMs and politicians, yes. Well, I don't think so. Already in June we at Transport & Environment (T&E) explained that this drop in EV sales in H1 2024 was not abnormal. How come? Carmakers need to meet binding CO2 targets as of 2025. In 2024 they'll first prioritise high-end petrol SUVs with high margins and only start ramping up EV sales by the end of 2024. We saw the same happening with the previous CO2 targets in the early 2020s. Magically we now see EV market in Germany picking up. The alignment between the current uptake (see ICCT) graph and our T&E projections from June (see comment), is striking. What does this mean for policymakers? Do not give in to attempts from Meloni and others to weaken CO2 targets for carmakers. Regulations create markets. When you set them well in advance and stick to them, industry will work towards them.
After a slow 1st half of the year, with 17% in September, the market share of battery-#electric new cars in #Germany is now on back on track. But the real increase will come in 2025. Why so? 🧐👉 https://lnkd.in/dmjxZBNp #co2standards #BEVs

𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐄𝐕𝐬 This October’s Paris Auto Show did not disappoint when it came to EV/PHEV options. The Europeans, Chinese, and even Cadillac all offered models that ran the gamut from mini-EVs to minivans and SUVs. As expected, the French offered more new models. Stellantis showed its range of EVs across its brands including its Chinese joint venture partner, Leapmotor. What was noticeable is the wide range of prices for these #EV, with many in the $20K segment. The EU market is more similar to the Chinese market than the US market, so we expect buyers to be attracted to smaller, less expensive vehicles. But the challenge remains for the manufacturers to make a profit from these #vehicles, especially if their Chinese competitors have a perceived cost advantage. (We’re not sure how much the EU #tariffs will affect pricing and profit of the Chinese imports.) All of our current and past auto show presentations dating back to 2008 are on our website: https://lnkd.in/gEdhsGda
