The Bus Centre of Excellence and Department for Transport UK, today, held a conference on anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls. It was an energizing space and so good to see so many women and male allies working on tackling gender-based violence and personal safety. It was heartening and inspiring to hear brave women in the industry share their experiences as victim-survivors of VAWG in the workplace and to make a call for industry-wide cultural change. Lots of discussion and interest on interventions including national and local data and knowledge sharing, campaign and behaviour change approaches, and the awareness training intervention Stagecoach, Welsh Women's Aid and myself have piloted in South Wales presented by Stagecoach South Wales Martin Gibbon Speaking on a panel, I touched on class divisions and intersectional experiences, and made a call to level-up interventions for bus users to match interventions that are already in place for rail passenger safety, by: - standardising travel safe police, operator, local/regional government partnerships - creating statutory guidance on staff training and standardising training and reporting requirements - reviewing bus and coach passenger rights applying to cancelled and disrupted services to ensure women can travel safely with confidence. Let's go!

After a series of many unfortunate events, I’m excited to say that we are making significant progress to address long standing issues that the sight loss community and I have faced when travelling by air. As I said when CNIB launched its new strategic plan, “no longer will we wait for change. Now, we demand it”. As many of you have seen, I have not been shy in sharing the egregious issues I have faced in airports, through airport security, and with airlines and rideshare and taxi companies. But thankfully, I think we are starting to turn a corner. I’m impressed by the commitment to collaboration that Canada’s air industry and regulators have shared over the past few weeks, as we have discussed the issues I have brought up, but more importantly, the systemic barriers that people who are blind, Deafblind or low vision face. While I’m encouraged by initial dialogue (with more details to be announced later) rest assured that CNIB and I will continue to keep their feet to the fire with the goal of creating a truly barrier-free Canada. If any other airlines, industry partners, or regulators who see this want to talk, we would be happy to connect. We are also meeting with a major rideshare company next month with the hope of achieving a similar amount of movement on that front as well. There will definitely be more to come on these issues. @Air Canada @CATSA @Greater Toronto Airport Authority #A11Y #Disability #AirTravel #Accessibility

Today is 22nd June 2024, and #WindrushDay, but how many know the significance? Today marks the day in 1948 that around 1000 British subjects from the Caribbean arrived on the ship HMT Empire Windrush and started their contribution to the UK, supporting the NHS, serving in the Armed Forces, and participating in life as British citizens. They were brought to the UK specifically to help rebuild post war Britain, and to work! Crude as it sounds, although they were British, their skin was dark and 76 years on, prejudice and racism sometimes feels worse to me today, because we really by now should know better. Stereotyping is what we do as humans - and it makes me wonder about the nature nurture argument even more so, when there is so much evidence to back up the lack of opportunity given to people of colour, correlating to achievement rates. But the way those particular people were treated subsequently since 2010 in particular by the UK Home Office is in my opinion shameful, and another thing brushed under the carpet, in a hope it will all go away. If any of your colleagues or friends are from Caribbean heritage, why not ask them about it, find out about the impact of this government’s ’Hostile Environment’ legislation, which also burdened employers with immigration enforcement! #WhatIff we treated people from all elements of the Commonwealth equitably and fairly? #Windrush #Justice4Windrush #DiversityMatters #InclusivityMatters #EquityMatters #HumanityFirst
