"Climate justice means putting equity and human rights at the core of decision-making and action on climate change...Climate change is a human rights issue. All people should have the agency to live life with dignity. However, the climate crisis is causing loss of lives, livelihoods, language, and culture, putting many at risk of food and water shortages, and triggering displacement and conflict." #DYK that Latinos contribute $3.2 trillion to the nation's GDP? Yet we still face significant socioeconomic disparities and marginalization. #Climatechange disproportionally impacts our communities underscoring the need for safeguards to protect us from climate disasters. Today, I attended the launch of the updated Latino Climate Justice Framework by GreenLatinos. This Framework builds on the 2022 edition, and outlines clear solutions for our communities and legislators. It also showcases inspiring case studies from organizations that have already implemented the Framework and are actively working to address climate-related issues in various sectors such as energy, agriculture, conservation, among others. This critical Framework not only helps amplify our voices but it also provides much-needed guidance to build a more #sustainable and #equitable future. This week, we are excited to join the Judiciary, at the Environment & Land Court Climate Justice Conference under the theme "The Role of the Courts in Remedying Climate Change Chaos: A Call for Distributive and Procedural Justice." We believe #climatejustice is about addressing the inequalities caused by climate change and ensuring that those most vulnerable to its impacts such as marginalized communities, indigenous groups, and persons with disabilities are empowered to adapt and thrive. We advocate for equitable solutions and co-create sustainable practices that leave no one behind. #ClimateJustice #SustainableFuture

Jessa Calderon, Director of Land, Water, and Climate Justice at the Sacred Places Institute for Indigenous Peoples, emphasizes that true equity involves policymakers and leaders proactively engaging with Indigenous communities to understand and honor what they hold sacred. This approach advocates for Indigenous peoples to lead, rather than requiring them to approach policymakers, ensuring their voices and values are central in decision-making processes. " It's really hard to have equity forward when there has been so much destruction." Despite the current legal environment, governments still have a lot of room to promote racial equity goals in climate work. Continuing to lead on race can also help preserve relationships between community-based organizations and local governments, ultimately strengthening our capacity for building equitable climate policy.
