A significant proposal aimed at offering terminated employees in both the government and private sectors the option to continue pension contributions until they reach retirement age or secure new employment has been presented. The proposal, spearheaded by five MPs and led by Strategic Thinking Bloc member Bassema Mubarak, seeks to ensure that Bahrainis do not lose pension benefits or service period calculations due to gaps in employment. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) Salary • Gross Monthly Salary: €10,377.43 • Net Monthly Salary: €8,089.63 after EU taxes and insurance contributions, additional national taxes may apply based on the MEP’s country of origin. Allowances General Expenditure Allowance (GEA) • Monthly Allowance: €4,950 • Purpose: Covers office management costs including telephone, postal charges, and equipment maintenance. Daily Allowance • Amount: €350 per day • Conditions: Requires signing an attendance register and participating in the majority of roll-call votes during plenary sessions; allowance is reduced to €175 per day if participation is below half. Travel Expenses • Reimbursement: MEPs are reimbursed for business-class air travel, first-class rail, or €0.58 per km for car travel up to 1,000 km. • Additional Travel: Up to €4,886 per year for non-official meeting travel expenses. Pensions and Transitional Allowance • Pension: Begins at age 63, with 3.5% of the salary for each full year of service, capped at 70%. • Transitional Allowance: Equal to one month’s salary per year of service for up to two years, unless receiving another pension or salary. Medical Reimbursement • Coverage: Two-thirds of medical expenses reimbursed. Staff Budget • Monthly Budget: €29,557 • Purpose: For hiring assistants for administrative and policy work. Additional Income • Side Jobs: MEPs can engage in side jobs, often earning significantly beyond their parliamentary salaries. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government announced an increase in the minimum basic salary from Rs. 32,000 to Rs. 37,000 in the 2024-25 Federal Budget. This move aims to boost the financial stability of government employees. The federal cabinet, led by PM Sharif, approved a 25% salary increase for employees in grades 1 to 16, a 22% raise for officers in grades 17 to 22, and a 15% pension increase for retirees.
