This necessitates a particular mix of tradespeople and experts. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for the sector. Here’s what I’m seeing as a recruiter: 🔨 Skills Shortages Are a Key Factor The industry is facing a well-documented shortage of skilled professionals, from tradespeople to project managers. Attracting and retaining talent is crucial to increasing capacity and meeting project demand. 📈 Project Backlogs Are Growing With limited capacity, many projects are experiencing delays. As Australia propels itself towards infrastructure goals, the need for an additional 90,000 construction workers has come to the forefront. This demand underscores the nation's robust development plans, spanning transport upgrades, housing projects, and more. While the current labor shortage poses challenges, there's a silver lining. It speaks volumes about the booming construction sector and the myriad of opportunities it presents for employment and economic growth. We all know good trades people are hard to find, me especially! With growing expectations of the builds within Australia, we need to look at ways to support the trades skillsets and growth and show the younger generations that these jobs are a special skillset to have and lead to amazing careers. How productive is the construction sector in Ireland ❓ Everyone is in agreement that Ireland has shortfalls in infrastructure. This is seen across a range of areas, including housing, health, transport and electricity. A big difficulty in addressing these challenges is getting large numbers of construction workers to build more houses and other infrastructure. But if we can increase what each worker produces (productivity), infrastructure deficits can be addressed more quickly. If you look across high-income European countries, you can see that productivity in the construction sector in Ireland is much lower than in other countries. That is, you get more output for each hour worked in construction in other countries. If productivity in the construction sector improves greatly, we would need far fewer workers to address some of the shortfalls in infrastructure we have.
