California’s $20 minimum wage is shredding the fast food industry with declining sales and hours of operations and yes, declining gross wages for employees. You can bet that going forward, employers will lean heavily into automation and robots to further reduce the need for labour. The solution?: better education and training for young people. We need employees with better technical skills to create higher wages and grow the economy - not forced wage hikes for low value labour. Think more community college technical training, and less reliance on expensive post secondary education (unless it’s for STEM or professional industry sectors). Yes, a BA with 2 years in the community college (to provide actual work skills) is ideal, but that is getting very expensive and doesn’t appear to be financially feasible for many young people. We must do better so that the next generation is not left behind.

I am delighted to share a few thoughts on Labour's proposed employment law reforms in The Times today. "Fire and rehire" is a difficult area - there are potential consequences of limiting employers' ability to dismiss and re-engage staff. It's crucial to strike a balance that considers both the employers' needs and the rights of the workforce. The debate on zero-hour contracts is also nuanced. While they are often criticised, it's important to recognise the flexibility they offer to both workers and employers. What might happen if grievances are not handled properly? Natasha Newlin and Tiegan James analyse a recent ruling that serves as a reminder to employers of the importance of carrying out a fair and thorough grievance procedure. Any investigator appointed should proceed without bias to enable an independent, thorough and transparent investigation process, leading to a clear and well-reasoned outcome letter.
