🎉 WE ARE ASAM (Tamarind)! 🎉 …Declared our Founding Director, Huijia Phua jubilantly, at our 10th Year anniversary celebrations with our beloved community of alumni, staff, community partners and above all, friends on 6th April 2024. After some 11 years since we planted #Skillseed, not knowing whether this little seed would even sprout, let alone grow, we now - finally - know what kind of plant we are. We are not Rambutan. We are not Durian. We are Asam - the Tamarind Tree. “A Tree is known by its Fruit.” 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐬𝐚𝐦 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐞. A native plant from Tropical Africa that has since naturalized in Asia (akin to our history as a nation of immigrants), its rather plain, brown pod-like fruits belies a piquant and tangy taste that evokes fond memories of home and family. The fruit is carefully extracted and traditionally pounded, by hand and with heart, into the paste that is used in dishes familiar to many of us - from Asam Pedas to Asam Laksa and Tamarind Juice. Why are we a food tree? Well, when we think about it - making food for others is often an act of love. It’s laborious; even back-breaking at times. It’s not glamorous work. But it’s fueled by concern for others. It’s a common language and bonds people through generations, across cultures, and beyond differences. Even the act of receiving food is one of trust - we trust that the food made for us by loved ones will not only be safe to consume, but will sustain us, nourish us and help us thrive. And we thank generations of Skillseedees and partners of Skillseed for watering, fertilizing and caring for this tree, helping us thrive even in times of drought. Especially in times of drought. Lim Jingzhou, one of our long-time friends and partners that we deeply admire, wrote this in reflection and shared it with Huijia: “They used to say, sacrifices have another name: It should be better known as gifts. I wasn’t able to see it back then, but it rings so true now: To choose to sacrifice Is to choose something worthwhile And to have a thing or person Like this to choose from Is always a gift and more” Thank you for all your sacrifices! _Public Gratitude_ Thanksgiving they say, is an application for more. As the year 2024 comes to a wrap, I would like to publicly express my deepest gratitude first to Almighty God, for the greatest gifts of all: Life. Being alive is the best gift any man can receive.
