𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲? It’s been 15 years since I set foot inside a radio station, so I can only imagine what broadcasting tech looks like now. But I can tell you what it was like when I started in radio, back in 1992. Almost everything was still analog. The one exception was our music, which was largely played off of CDs. But a good chunk of our music library was still on analog tape. We stored the songs on “carts,” which were essentially 8-track cassette cases (ask your elders) with a loop of audio tape inside of them. About 30% of our music, and all of our commercials, were played off of those carts. What about phone calls? Glad you asked. We answered our listener lines on an honest-to-goodness corded office phone. We recorded the calls onto a giant reel-to-reel tape recorder, then played the recordings back on the air. And how did we edit those calls? Glad you asked. We’d mark the edit points on the audio tape with a yellow grease pencil. Then we’d slice the edit points with a razor blade, take out the bad section, and tape the two loose ends together with glorified Scotch tape. Oh, and there was no Internet yet. So there’s that. Obviously, tech has taken a giant leap forward since 1992. But the central challenge we face hasn’t changed at all: Learn the new tools of our trades, or risk being stuck in the past. #adapt #audiobooks #elearning #voiceacting

The audio version of “Digital Kindness” has been submitted to the ACX/Audible reviewers! Here’s hoping it clears all the hurdles. 🤞 I’ve wanted to create audio versions of my books for a long time. I (naively) thought it would be easy. 🤦🏻♀️ I knew I had the narration thing down, already had a home studio set up for audio versions of my Digital Hope newsletter, and completed a podcast that was more complicated from a production standpoint. I didn’t do the production myself on that podcast 😜, but I thought, since an audiobook doesn’t need music, sound effects, mixing multiple voices, inserting audio clips, or complex editing, production should be pretty straightforward. 😅 Several years, many starts and stops, and a ton of YouTube tutorials later 🤣, I finally got it done. If/when my books become my primary income source, I will absolutely hire professionals to handle audiobook production. For now, though, I’m proud of myself for (hopefully) figuring it out. It’s a delight to step out of my comfort zone and create something different from the things I normally make.

🌟 Being a Fully Independent Voice-Over Artist in Australia: My Journey 🌟 As an independent voice-over artist, every day is an adventure in creativity and entrepreneurship! Over the past seven years, I’ve worked tirelessly to grow our business, managing not only my bookings but also Anthony’s. From setting up new roster registrations to fully producing audio for commercials, audiobooks, e-learning, and so much more—it’s been a wild and fulfilling ride! Behind the scenes, I’m a one-woman superhuman! 💪 I coordinate our auditions and castings, manage social media, and oversee our studio, accounting, and marketing processes. It’s taken years of effort to create smooth workflows—and let’s be honest, it’s still a work in progress. One of my favorite projects this year was narrating a short audiobook that will soon be published across 35 audiobook platforms! It's only been published in the past couple of weeks so it's still making it's way to all of the 35 platforms, now on about 5 or so. This dark and obscure story, written in very old English, was both challenging and deeply rewarding. The narration included some unusual and tricky words, but I loved every moment of bringing it to life. I’ve also realized something important: I can’t pour from an empty cup. After seven years of not taking proper breaks, I’m finally carving out a precious week off between Christmas and New Year. It’s a small but meaningful step toward finding balance and recharging my creative energy. Looking ahead to 2025, I’m focusing on two passions: 📚 Audiobook narration – I love bringing stories to life. 🎮 Video game voice acting – With two indie games under my belt, I can’t wait to explore more opportunities in this exciting field.
